Replacing Captain's Seat

Has anyone replaced their captain's seat with a more comfortable model? Air ride or spring seat perhaps? I think that a more comfortable arrangement is in my future and wanted to know if anyone else has done this and what their feelings are one way or the other.

thanks-

Ben

Good topic, I'd like to replace mine with a seat that folds flat and offers flip-up armrests. Sadly, I don't think it exists.

Keep looking....it's out there somewhere and in some fashion...if not just what you had in mind remember the "SawSaw" and big hammer.

Before you buy a new seat you might consider doing what I did with mine. I bought a 2" thick high density piece of foam from an upholstery shop. It was a simple job to remove the wooden panel from the base of the seat then cut 2" of the approximately 3" original foam using an electric bread knife and replacing with the high density foam. The seat looks completely original with side bolsters but is much more comfortable.

I just replaced mine last week with a couple of big man seats from Cabelas. They look nice but the bottom is not as deep (front to back) as the originals and my 1st mate doesn't like them. I am not too wild about them my self but the old ones were looking pretty shabby after 24 yrs. They make one sit up straighter also which probably isn't all bad. I am sure after several hundred hours of trolling for salmon we will think they are just great.

Hi Jack (don't make that greeting in an airport :crook ),
I like the look of that seat from Cabela's. Could you cant it back with a shim to get it less upright? One concern I had seeing the photo of those seats is the armrests (which would be great if they work) - does the starboard one interfere with operating the throttle?

TIA

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Somehow I found these Folding Armrests while searching for other things. I'm going to order a pair and install them on the factory seat. Hopefully they'll do the job. I'll post back when I know one way or the other.

Some of my friends who drive Hewescraft aluminum boats (which can really pound in a chop) have replaced their OEM seats with new seats built on top of these suspension assemblies.

I used a Garlick seat....one with a lower back bolster...nice..just like Fishtales.... notice he mounted a flat cutting board on the back of his seat....neat idea...but that's Roger... I also installed a passive suspension unit from West Marine....what it is....two plates with two rubber bushings between...so it can be adjusted for stiffness.... works well...plus it raises the seat so I can see over the bow at plaining speeds..... I did have to re-angle my steering wheel so I could fit between the seat and the dash....but that was easy...I just ordered a new angled mounting bracket from west marine....about $15 and that cured the problem...

Joel, can you post the part number on the steering wheel bracket you got from West Marine? I have a problem fitting under the steering wheel too and I didnt know there might be such an easy fix.

Thanks!

I just looked in the catalog and don't see it.... probably have to go into the store and look it up in their catalogs.....or go on line and look it up...
The company is Teleflex and all it is called is a angled mounting bracket....and it replaces the 90 degree bracket that is on their now... on the outside because I have a wheel mounted auto pilot I used a motorwell boot..... as a bezel....looks much better and works super...plus it was cheep.

I purchased a new seat and it's on the way. I picked the following model by Garelick because it is deeper than the others, therefore I believe it will fit better. It is spendy, but appears to be really comfortable.

Here is the link to the model I purchased from Cabelas:

What I can't accurately determine is whether or not I will need any special mounting hardware, i.e. slider, mounting spider bracket, etc. If anyone knows, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, I will just wait for it to arrive.

I am looking forward to some long hauls in comfort.......hopefully.

The original seat was too wide - it whacked the edge of the cabinet behind, and it had those finger-biting hinges. I hate those things.

My replacement seat is the bottom one shown in the link.

We took it to an upholstery shop and had it covered with the fabric from the original seat. It looks nice, swivels 360 degrees, doesn't hit anything, is fairly comfortable, mounted on the original bracket, and was not too expensive.

Well we now have about 35 hrs. a-- time on our new too short seats.
My wife hates them worse than before and I don't like them either. I kept my old ones so maybe new material on those and re-install them.
