repower 16' from 2-stroke to 4-stroke 50hp

Need to repower 16' C-Dory from 40hp Johnson 2-stroke to 50hp 4 stroke. Honda touts its motors as "lightest in class." I see Tohustu 50hp is even lighter. HELP
 
I repowered from a 40 Johnson to a 50 Tohatsu in 2014. Weight difference between the Tohatsu and Honda is not significant enough to notice any difference on your 16. So go with whatever you want. Does one cost less? Do you have a better service network for one or the other in your area?

My Tohatsu was terrific during the time I owned it - lots of power, and trouble free. First choice was actually a Honda, but my preferred dealer, EQ Marine, at the time wasn't offering Hondas and it would have cost an extra $1500 to get one so Les talked me into a Tohatsu instead, and it was fine. Personally I prefer the looks of the Honda, so if all other factors were the same, that would be my choice. But both are great motors. Tohatsu pics are in my albums.

Don't know about the Tohutsu but we have 310 hours on an 09 Honda 50 EFI and performance has been flawless. If you are running a single engine, I would suggest that reliability is priority #1, performance #2, and a few pounds weight differential no more than #3. Others out there have experience with other brands which likely are equally good. No matter the brand, I think everyone would agree that timely maintenance is the key to long life and reliability.
 
I re-powered the Pocket Yacht, from a 40hp 2 stroke Evinrude to a 50hp 2 stroke Evenrude E-Tec and love it. :love

It's quiet, economical and the extra 10hp more than makes up for all of the stuff I carry when fishing. :wink

Tohatsu manufactures it's own outboards and also many of the outboards for Nissan and Mercury. I think below 30hp, the Mercury and Tohatsu outboards are basically the same engines and are manufactured by Tohatsu. So I don't think one needs to be concerned about the reliability of the Tohatsu engines. They have a good reputation for reliability. I'd make a decision based mostly on the local availability of service first and price second.
