Ripple Rock

I know many C-Brats will be travelling over Ripple Rock in Seymour Narrows north of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, BC. In 1958 the Canadian Government blew up the rock, which was responsible for more than 100 shipwrecks and a similar number of deaths. The explosions was covered live across Canada on national TV. I found this interesting video of the explosion that might be of interest to you if you are going to be travelling this way. While it is unlikely that a C-Dory would ever sink due to Ripple Rock, it certain has made the Inside Passage safer for larger ships and Cruise Ships.

I grew up on Vancouver Island and I remember my Dad taking us up island, to see, hear and feel the explosion. I don't know where we were, but I do remember hearing what sounded like thunder and feeling the thunder in the ground. I know we were someplace around Campbell River. At Browns Bay Resort, (just north of CR) there is a restaurant there that has a neat photo sequence of the explosion.

Peter & Judy;

Great video. The video that followed this one on youtube was a 27 minute version named "demolition of ripple rock" documenting the process of drilling tunnels and laying the explosive. It is very interesting also.

Really hard to believe that was 51 years ago. I didn't think I was that old, and I still remember the tickle in my feet. Felt that but never heard anything really loud, just s rumble like distant thunder.
