Rod Storage, 2 - Piece Salmon Rods

I know a lot of guys just leave them in the berth while under tow, but I'd rather have a clean year-round in the cabin rod storage solution. my current "big fish" rods are 1-piece, so that creates a challenge. while moored I just keep them in the rocket launchers and hope nobody is brave enough to steal them, but I'd love any suggestions you guys have regarding long term rod storage, or if you have a favorite 2-pc rod that could work well too since I could break it down and store it like Hemingway did on Pilar...

My glass rods do break in half, but i almost never store them on the boat that way. I like to have them all ready to go. I don't want to miss the early bite fiddling with my gear.

I leave them in the rocket lanchers if staying on the boat or traveling to a spot. With a rubber band wrapped around the flasher to keep it from spinning in the breeze. If Im moored or on the trailer, they're locked in the berth with the rod tips shoved up into the anchor locker. Im not very trusting though (paranoid!). I also lock the downriggers in the berth. Im curious what others do.

our downriggers have a lock capability that I haven't yet used but they are a bit harder to remove than the scotty slide locks so someone would really have to give it a go.

the berth works, I just want a more perm solution. I dont like the idea of rods laying anywhere where they could be broken, and I'm a bit paranoid (experience) of hooks getting caught in the sheets/blankets/sleeping bags in the berth. I just like having them out of the way all the time because we are entering the boat for a number of different reasons throughout the week even when its in my driveway (like right now my wife has just finished new curtains and is doing some upholstery/sheets, etc).

These are plastic covered steel. I just screwed the rod holders to pieces of oak and then used 3M 5200 to fasten them to the ceiling of the trucks cap. They have made a couple round trips to Florida. I do use rubber bands to keep them from jumping out of the V'd portions.

Yeah the scotty locks are a total scam. You have to buy the slide locks for $80 each, and then the locks for the swivel bases, another $80 each. That is pretty steep!

they are good equipment though. Scottys were all I ever knew before we got this boat. Ron had it pre rigged with Penns but they have been treating us well so far, got me into a nice makinaw on chelan a couple weeks ago ;)

I keep the rod in the rod racks when on the boat. But when trailering or at the house I have broken them down and just laid them in the v-berth. I wanted to put in rod racks on the ceiling but was forbidden to do so by Susan. She claimed that she would get her hair in them??

all my salmon rods are two piece 8 to 9plus ft rods. My only one piece rods are the halibut rods at 6 ft. Most of the time when trailering the 27 I just leave the rods in the cockpit with the tips sticking out the back and tied to the rail. In the 22 it was but end first into the v-berth.

best tip is to have quick clips or snaps tied onto the main line. That way when you are done fishing just unclip the flashers and put them away. I never leave the flashers hanging on the rods when they are in the rod rack above the boat.

for day trips they are in the back of truck and then into rocket launcher when going into the water. for overnight trips we will be doing the 5200 rod holder to the cabin roof.we run rainshadow DR rods and they break down. we don't do bottom fish overnight trips where we stay on the boat so for the one piece i will just leave in the cabin when we are away.

also I feel unless you have aluminum boat those DR locks give a false security. all it takes is someone grabbing the boom and using it for leverage to cause a ton of problems. plus they only take a second to pop on and pop off.

Check out our new rod racks in Reef Madness album, Tom Cat Improvements. Of course we have more overhead length. It was sure nice to have the rods up and out of the way on our BC trip. Photos of trip to follow soon.

pretty sharp setup Gene. I noticed my shorter trout rods and even my bass rod fit up there the same way, but the salmon rods (1pc) are too long. that's why I'm thinking of investing into some good 2pc setups.

Be careful when trailering with the rods on the rocket launchers. I was rigged to get on the water in Port Alberni, and went down a side street after buying license and various tackle. All of a sudden I had a great hit, the reels started stripping line and clicking like a Tyee was on the line. By the time I stopped, I had about 200 feet of line clicked off 2 of the poles. My jigs had caught up in a branch of a low slung tree, and I looked quite unique walking down the road reeling in line as I approached the branch. I was able to recover all the gear from one pole, but had to break the line off another. -- a fishing story to remember! :). Ron

haha that was a site I'm sure. Probably similar to the duck I caught in Chelan on accident, he was a fighter!

I have seen quite a few people cruising down the road with rods in the rockets but we went through a couple tunnels that were small enough to make me think we would have broke the rods right off had we been rigged that way.

on the flip side, I've also already put two new holes in a 10 year old otherwise perfect until now sleeping bag because I wasn't careful enough when stowing full rigged rods in the berth..... you win some you lose some...

I built a rod holder over the table will carry four two piece rods a picture is in C-Critter pictures . works well and you would half to really work to hit them with your head.

unclerichie, looked at your picture and they seem to be solid circles how do you get the rods in and out? that is what i am looking for as i don't like the j hook looking ones as i would be afraid they would fall out while underway or on the trailer.

and now looking at gene album are those open and closing holders? where would one pick those up at? looks like it would be a slick system and would also work for fillet table I am trying to mount to the back rail bar.

Hi one side is split and hinged it drops down to insert rods. I used weather striping to hold them from rattling an sliding around have worked well for 7 years now . Used 3-M 5200 fast set to anchor them they are solid.
