Roybi 2000W Portable Inverter Generator

I asked here a couple of weeks ago and the concensus was to still get a Honda. I actually tried buying one but the Home Depot site gave an error - and when I called they said it would take a week to process and then another week to deliver - so I bought a Honda off craigslist.

I think the specs are about the same, but the Honda name, available accessories, and servicability (if it ever needs service) are indeed worth a premium over a newcomer. One positive factor for the Ryobi is that it might be less of a theft target. <grin>

I tend to shy away from products that are sold by people who don't ordinarily sell that stuff. I own Roybi electric power tools and they're now made in China, as is every other tool. Decent quality, but Roybi doesn't make gasoline engines, which is the critical part. I don't know where they get that engine, but I'd try to find out. I suppose Honda gets their engines made in China, but that's their main line of business. BMW is a step up, their engines are made in Taiwan.

Also Home Depot doesn't offer any service after purchase. You can return it, under their conditions, or if that's too late, it's all yours. And that charming lady at the service desk will tell you so.

I also noted that Home Depot sells a 1000 watt Honeywell generator. I don't know what Honeywell, Inc. does in the United States, but they sold their consumer business to Honeywell China. Separate corporation. So you're now dealing directly with China. That may be a positive thing.

I also own a number of Ryobi tools--most run on the 14 volt system, and I got them just because of that--small shop vac, grinder, chain saw, drill, circular saw, power sprayer etc--carry in the RV and use around the house--so far these have done very well. I also have an older plunge router which is a better quality instrument.

I would say that in the long run, that probably a Honda would be a bettery buy. But it will be interesting to see how these are ranked on the portable generators in the RV forums, which seem to give good analysis of these units.

I don't have the generator, but Ryobi has been in the engine powered business for a long time. String trimmers, chain saws and so on. I suspect that they will be as good as Honda. If prices were the same, I'd go the honda route, but if I can save more than a hundred bucks, I'd not fear the Ryobi product.

Well, it looks like the Ryobi will be just under $600, versus somewhere in the $900-$1000 range for the Honda through a dealer (can get another $100 off via wisesales.com). Our sales tax is close to 10%, so that's a net difference of around $300.

FWIW, the Ryobi site does not publish a sound rating, but the link on the HD site does and it's equivalent to the Honda.

My recommendation is to wait at least a month and see what early adopters (i.e. guinea pigs) have to say.

If you think you will ever be in a position to sell it, go Honda for lower depreciation.

Honda power products are easy to sell used, for top dollar.

There is a published sound rating its 63db. That is actually quite loud. Also part of the noise is vibration. The vibration is going to be a problem with this unit.

Honda and Yamaha make a first class generator. If you are going to use one, these are the kind to get. They are quiet and have less vibration.

If cost is a factor, and it usually is, just wait until its in the budget.

A lot of times I think that a generator is more misery then they are worth. Generally I will not carry one.

Don't overlook the Yamaha generators. I've had a 1000 for 6 or 7 years, and other than me leaving bad gas in it, it has run like a top every season. I am thinking about getting the 2800, as it will run the A/C on the Airstream.

I have had quite a few Ryobi (NOT "Roybi") products, mostly electric tools but also gas weed whackers - they have all been top notch products. I have a Honda 2000i, and so I am not really in the market myself. But I would be very interested in this generator if I were in the market, knowing I could save $300 or more compared to a Honda. That is about 3/4 of a tank of gas for Daydream!

The original post was over a year ago, so this should be a common item. I have not seen one of these generators in my local Home Depot (but have nto really looked).

Not a lot of reviews on the web--but not many complaints either. I went with Honda again for Thisaway.
