Safety boat for rowing race around Bainbridge Island

Hello, I am the race director for the Sound Rowers Bainbridge Island Marathon, an open water race which circumnavigates Bainbridge Island (approximately 26 miles). The race is open to all human powered watercraft and is held the Saturday following Labor Day. I am looking for anyone who may be interested in volunteering as a safety boat for the event.

Most racers are in rowing shells and racing kayaks but we have had pedal boats, wherrys and stand-up paddleboards register in the past. This is a small event, usually only around 30 participants. Finish times range from 3 to 5+ hours.

Safety boats trail the racers around the course and are prepared to render assistance if needed. Racers are required to be capable of self rescue but there is always the risk of a medical or other type of emergency. We usually have 2-3 coast guard auxiliary boats on hand but additional eyes on the water are always helpful. I can offer a small stipend for fuel ($100) and fresh pastries on the morning of the race.

Kevin, Thank you for asking here. I have participated in safety boat service for multiple rowing race events in the area, The international that based out of Port Townsend several years ago was my first. I have also don the R2AK PT top VicBC segment every year up to this one, and the SEVENTY 48. I love that kind of boating. It is a way to give back, and always a pleasure. I am not sure if I will be available that weekend, but I would encourage any of the C-BRATS in the are to take this on.

It is usually an easy slow cruise being mindful of your wake. Having two pairs of eyes is helpful, and good VHF com skills helps too. Carrying extra blankets, fleece jackets, and PFDs along with some energy snacks could be helpful. In about 12 years of doing this type of activity, I have only had to tow a couple of times. Most of these racers are superb athletes, and are fully capable of handling them selves. So, most of the time, you just do slow cruise and watch. And be prepared if needed.
