Salmon - B10 and Beyond

Nice fish Tim...you must have been the guy I heard about that caught the only fish in the tri-county area.
Jr Buckwheat, Bess c Lyle and I, braved the grave yard of the pacific on both days only to chase after a few scattered fish with nothing to show for it but grins. I don't feel bad, the charter boats where struggling to get fish also.

A note of thanks to Ken and Tyler on the Blue-C for taking me over the Columbia Bar and into the ocean to fish this past weekend. The fish weren't very cooperative, but Ken, Tyler and Marge were great hosts. Marge even fed me on Saturday night. Thank you Marge.

I really enjoyed the time on their boat, and I realized coming in on Saturday that I had more to learn about handling a big following sea before I went over the bar on my own. The C-Dory with Ken at the helm handled all of the water conditions well and I was never uncomfortable. Sunday was clear calm and warm. If the fish would have been biting it would have been a perfect day.

Lyle

well thanks Lyle, you where a most excellent guest and we would be glad to have you aboard again (when the fish are bitting). I wish we would have know about the Worldmark room ahead of time and you could have crashed there. That was a bummer having all those hookers knocking on your door all night at that place you stayed at.
I can't believe you weren't just a bit uncomfortable crossing the bar...I ...mean with me screaming and Jr curled up in the fetal position praying and all

Waaa Hooo. schools out, time to fish. anybody headed out this weekend? the ocean is predicted to be pretty durn calm this weekend.

Today I took a friend from work out to try and catch his first ever salmon. He done good. The 30 pounder he's holding was the first fish on the boat this morning, and the first salmon he ever caught in his life. A short while later he caught his second one. Both were kings and both were very bright. I got me two little silvers to limit the boat.

Saw a heart breaker at the dock when we got back. Some folks were leaving a guide boat with their catch in plastic bags. A lady had a 37# king in her bag, and the bag ripped letting the fish fall into the water. I saw her trying to grab and hold on before it fell off the dock, and ran over there with my net, but it was too late. It disappeared for about half a minute, and then a seal brought it to the surface one last time as he took off with it. She said she got a picture, at least. I saw the fish when they took it out of the boat, and it was a nice one. Not nearly as bright as Dave's, though.

Anyhow, back to the guy with the beginner's luck. He says this salmon fishing is way more fun than church, and he is going again tomorrow. It was also his first trip across the Columbia River bar, and I let him run the boat all the way back in. Pretty cool stuff for the old guy.

Nice Mike nothing like getting someone into their first fish and big one at that. Saw a 50lb chinook at Newport last week what a monster.

Going to do some salmon and halibut fishing next week. If conditions allow and they are not more than 50 miles out may try for tuna also.

It was a beautiful morning on the Pacific, Well, I guess so anyway - the fog didn't start to lift until noon, but the water was flat.

Took Mr. Beginner's Luck and Tiffany with me. The guy's luck ran out. So did Tiff's. We got a whole bunch of fish, but they were all either natives or too little to mess with. Finally, when we were down to our last few bait fish, and ready to head back in on high slack, one of us (me!) got a nice sized king, and then a short while later got another one.

The fog this morning was pretty thick. Maybe 100 yards visibilty all the way from Warrenton to the CR Bouy. First time I ever ventured very far in the fog. It was kinda cool.

Back to work tomorrow.

just finish a week long harvest stint. The fishing is picking up both in the ocean and in the river. We managed to get the brother in law half way trained in the art of salmon harvest and crabbing......it took an almost constant barrage of verbal abuse but he finally started getting with the program on the killdeck. He left with a cooler full of fillets including a big Nookie.........arrrrrg we lost sooo many fish to rookie mistakes

Wish I could attend the carnage but we're headed to Joseph, OR as soon as Judy gets off work and won't get home till Sunday sometime. Did get a chance to go out Tue. late afternoon to watch the Bergeson Bros put on a fish clinic but did finally get a 27# aboard. No other bites for us.

Have time off next week so I hope to be a regular at the dock most every morning. I'll check the Clatsop Spit Weather gauge for wind Monday though before I drive up since that could be the one bad day. If it's good then I'm "gone fishun".

Tim

Joseph? beautimous country...stop in downtown LaGrand at Foleys Station for a meal........we'll save some fish for you

Went outside at daylight this morning. We got our four fish (silvers) on a lumpy ocean. We ran out at high slack, and figured we would wait for the next flood to start about noon before heading back in. The CG kept saying "Swells 2 to 4 feet in all areas, with an occasional 6", so we took off across the bar an hour or so before low water. I don't know where they got those numbers, because my boat is about 6' from the water line to the roof, and a good three miles worth of swells were a bunch taller than the boat. The boat handled it well, though. No problems and no finger impressions in the wheel. It is a weird feeling to be turning 5000 rpm, making 6 mph on the GPS, and 18 mph water speed. Then you gotta hit the brakes before the speed numbers reverse. I was real glad I didn't take one of the girls along today.

We will be staying inside in the morning. They have been catching a lot of big kings right off of Warrenton, and the ODFW checker said there were a lot of silvers in the river today. That's good, because I think the Raven/Heron boys have about cleaned out the big fish. They have several 30+ pounders, and one at 46 pounds. Fish piggies.

I'll be putting a few Lyle's Lures in the water tomorrow. My regular fishing partner and Tiffany will both be aboard. We'll look for you all out there.

the ocean is predicted to be pretty snotty all week...arrrg...I'll look for you on the river this week Mike. We'll probably spend most of our time between the bridge and the church hole. I have a crew of hooligians for the next few days...hope they don't try to mutiny.
I may even stop in and take that durn hose off your hands this afternoon

Just got home from a great day of fishing along side the TyBoo and the Heron. Put the lines in at 0- dark:30 and not much till just before slack tide then we got a to small Chinook followed by a nice 9# Silver. After that we boated two 15# plus Chinook then nothing for about 20 minutes till we hooked into another Chinook that was well over 25#. Sure is hard to turn those loose. After that we spent another good hour with only one good hit. Left about 9:45 so I and my fishing partner can each get in a half day of work. Without the work this would be a wonderful day.

Such a good day that I think I'll do it again in the morning except that I may have to give up the work part of it.

Tim

Three kings, one silver. A couple released natives in the mix, too. The first king was Tiffany's. About 15# and very pretty. The second king (big and kinda ugly) and the silver (very nice - maybe 14#) were Curt's. Those all came in one pass by 27 in a few chaotic minutes. Tried another hour before I finally landed a small king. Not as pretty as Tiff's, but not too bad. By then the current was ripping pretty good, so we bagged it. We'll probably wait until about 8:00 to go out tomorrow.

Ken - I am going back down in a few to clean up the boat. I'll set your hose out in case I don't see you.

Tiffany says when she grows up she is getting a C-Dory with pink accent. Hot pink. So, Jeff and Scott, you guys at the factory have 7 years to perfect the gelcoat color.

Anyone fishing B-10 this Saturday or Sunday?
I am considering draging Sea Lion up there but would likely not be able to fish until Sunday morning. I am trying to justify bringing the boat. The wife is going to medicate and try to get on the water again! Yay!
She mentioned something about just cruising around if the fishing wasn't good. I doubt she would mind if we trolled while we crusied  .

Any tips on the area? I am usually on someones elses boat and heading outside when I am in the area.

Any help or response appreciated...

Lots of good info on ifish, things have been slow lately, hopefully they'll pick up this weekend. It's supposed to be a nice weekend for a boat ride if nothing else

The Lynn Marie did not cross the bar this morning but I did talk with the "Old Forester" a 22cruiser from down the road. Bob was out with two other fellows and they picked up a Chinook and 5 nice Coho north of the north jetty. All the radio talk said the river was way sloppy compared to the ocean even though there was still a good swell.

Fishing in the river was not near as good with us only picking up one raggy little silver. If you haven't sworn off bars the ocean may be your best bet, if not I'll see you in the river but not till mid morning. TyBoo Mike may have better info about the river and what to use since I saw him out in the middle of things too.
