Scotty Downrigger mounting - gunwale or handrail?

If Da Nag is talking about the hatches that are made for holding the plano plastic tackle boxes that is a fantastic idea! I may have to go and see what I can do in my Bay boat now :D :D

Sounds like a great idea. I looked at the pic you have posted. Is that on the 16 footer? Mine has about a 4 inch pvc pipe that goes from the cabin all the way back past the shelf about 5-6 inches below the top of the gunwhale. I wouldn't have room for that large a hatch unless I not only cut a hole, but cut off the pipe as well. Does your 16 footer have that pipe? Where did you buy the tackle hatch. If I could make one fit, it would be great.

That particular pic was from my 19 Angler, but I did the same setup on the 16.

On the 16, there was no pipe containing wires - they were simply bundled and strapped to the bottom of the gunwale, leaving plenty of room. Still, assuming the pipe is directly under the gunwale on yours - my guess is, there's room beneath it to install the tackle hatches.

One item worth mentioning - you will have to remove some flotation if going this route. The amount removed is minimal, didn't bother me in the least...but others may feel differently.

The tackle hatches are made by Tempress - here's a link to the manufacturers page, but they are available many places. The 1115's look like what I bought, but check the dimensions - I don't have the details in front of me.
