Sea Sport Thoughts

Hi,
I wondered how most handle inquiry's about your boats at the dock and launch ramps or where ever really. I thought of making up some business cards with a C-Brat logo, my name and a list of contact info including the C-brat web address and current Sea Sport phone number and Scott B as the contact. I certainly would not want to infringe on any copyright issues. It would save time when I'm trying to get going fishing etc and would be a quick way to give good solid info to prospective buyers. Does anything like this exist? Maybe DaNag and TyBoo could use this as an income provider for their efforts to maintain the site. All cards could be the same layout with just a name change of the brat was handing them out.
Just a thought. I could certainly have them printed locally if no one else wanted a piece of this action.

MS Word and trip to Staples or Office Despot for a sheaf of pre-scored business cards are a cheap alternative to professional printing of small quantities. Been doing that for decades.

As far as I can see, no copyright infringements involved and no fraud involved, so go for it. Then again I ain't a lawyer like my young nephew. Maybe he'll chime in.

Dave,

I know what you mean. We get inquiries at gas stations, rest areas, ramps and have even had a few people signal us to pull over.

Marcia made up some business-type cards on our PC that has a picture of Valkyrie, our contact info (phone numbers and email address) and the C-Brats website. I mostly tell them to go to this site and if they have any questions to send me an email or call. The only "problem" that I have encountered doing this is when Marcia rolls her eyes when they have a question, knowing that my pride in Valkyrie and the line will cause us to lose at least 10-15 minutes at that spot.

Nick, if it helps you any, tell Marcia she is very fortunate she is not traveling with me, because my wife would say "45-60 minutes at that spot".....

Man , I sure have done a lot of parking lot boat shows on my way to a boat show . But I carry cards and literature and my wife supports that whole process !

Well...there certainly is a copyright issue with the C-Brats logo, but I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone of our liberal personal use policy.

Basically, anyone is free to use it for personal items - calling cards as described here, certainly fall into that category. As do t-shirts, stickers, hats, etc.

The line in the sand with respect to the logo - profit. If you're making money off something with the logo on it, that's a no-no unless you've received prior approval. And if you're whipping up a bunch of items for a gathering, we ask that you contact us first on that as well...although we've never turned down such a request.

For small items like business cards, saving a local copy of the logo at the top of the page might suffice for your design. However, I've also the original vector artwork available for projects that require it.

We've been swapping boat cards with people (and RV cards before that) for a lot of years. For years, I shot photos of people with their RVs, boats, airplanes, motorcycles, etc., for use on cards. Once digital imaging became commonplace, it is easier for most folks to just make up their own, especially for small quanties.

Currently, I carry my favorite image cards with our info, but NOT with the factory info. At one time, I asked both the Reynolds and Fluid Marine to send some brochures that I could keep on the boat for handing out. Never got a reply. I'm not comfortable with my name associated with a business name that I don't work for, but I thought handing out a brochure would help with potential sales. I have no doubt that the factory(s) has no idea how many people inquire about our boats when we're out and about.

Just a fun fact here: I own the US trademark for Campercards®. Through most of the 90s, we photographed people with their "stuff" and produced cards. If you picked up a Trailer Life, Motorhome, AOPA Pilot, or Family Motor Coach magazine, you may have seen our ads at one time or another.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Jim,
What an easy to spell last name you have. :smileo We will just do them up ourselves as suggested, I'll put Wefing's down as a dealer and the latest contact number I have for Scott B. at the factory, C-Brat web site address. They don't need my info other than my name for all the bird dog fees and free stuff they will send me for all the boat sales I create. :D
Oh, now were passing Duramax's are we? I'm so hurt. Fix It Again Tony :P

A few years ago we had a slip up in Everett. One day we pulled in just as a guy a few "doors" down was trying to sell his boat. A potential buyer leaves his slip and comes running up to us and hollers back to her husband, "Oh honey it's so cute, I want one like that". My neighbor was not pleased. MartyPxxxxx.

Vinyl stickers? I'd love one each on my truck and boat, in black of course.

I do carry "personal" cards--when we were full time cruising we had "boat cards"--with ham call sign, boat photo or an art outline of the boat. I usually just take one of my cards and write c-brats.com on the back That gives the person a contact in the forum as well as my name and number if they ever have a question.

For years I'd encounter people at ORV Parks or in the forest and scramble to find a pen and paper so we could set up a ride(dirt bikes). Same thing when sledding at the Sno-Parks or up in the mountains. I finally got wise and printed up some cards that I keep with me. They're actually refrigerator magnets that I make up on the computer. I've got a version for boating/fishing as well. In fact, the image of Adeline at anchor (see my signature) graces one design. Each is a picture of me and my toy along with my phone number. Simple business cards get lost but a picture on their refrigerator reminds them of the guy who wants to go out and play. The magnetic sheets can be picked up at Walmart cheap! Made by Avery.

Now that Dave's brought it up I'll be modifying the boat version to include the C-Brat website.

Speaking of all the attention the C-Dory's get-

At the boat show we had someone come by and express that while he liked the C-Dory product, the one reason he wouldn't buy one is all the attention they get at the dock.

Go figure....

Some attention is better than others.

The Jenny B was always moored at the Marine Corps marina in San Diego and our particular pier was the same one used by the Coast Guard's smaller patrol/response boats. To get to work, they had to pass my bow on the way to their boats.

Several Coasties have stopped to chat about the C-Dorys, and at least one had "C-Dory" on his "next boat" list.

What DID make that arrangement nice was on the bay and in nearby waters. I never got stopped - not even once. Oh I had a couple come charging my way once or twice but soon as they saw it was the MCRD C-Dory, they headed elsewhere.

Oh, and it's also quite a chick magnet over at the Coronado public docks....

Speaking of the Coast Guard, does anyone know what ever shook out regarding the death of that 8 year old boy at the Boat Parade in San Diego last Xmas? I remember hearing about the incident when it happened, but then nothing more.

I'm not much in putting bumper stickers on my vehicles, but, in a heart beat, would put on a C-Brat or C-Dory window decal. Seems like a good way to generate both some income for the site, and interest (if we want it) in the boats.

PS: make mine burgundy, or make 'em all black and keep Mark happy :thup

The latest (and only) news between Christmas and now was broadcast around February 16th on KFMB here. Here's the link to the story.

That should bring the story to the top again here in San Diego.
