Seat cushions in the 22

One concern I had when buying the 22 was having a proper reading and writing "chair" on such a small boat. I quickly found out that putting the settee in berth configuration and adding a pillow behind me solved that problem!

However, two other problems surfaced. First, the factory supplied cushions are nowhere near dense enough to properly support me. Second, as you all probably know, the jigsaw puzzle of cushions used to make up the berth is missing a few pieces.

I thought it would be great to replace the seatbottom foam inserts with something much denser and at the same time have someone make up a single cushion slightly larger than the table to snugly fill that space in berth mode.

Has anyone done either of these simple mods? Do you know who might already have the patterns or sizes for the cushions? What type of foam should I order?

Thanks!

BTW, I just finished reading all of the curtain/window covering posts I could find through searching. Very useful info through the years.

I'm with you on everything that you have said and have a few mods that might help you out.

One, if properly made by the cushion supplier for the factory, there are enough cushions to make the dinette into a berth. However, when the cushions were made for our boat before it left the factory, the cushion seatbacks which become the base for the "bed", were made too short, leaving a six inch gap when in bed mode, making it impossible to sleep without having the cushions move around. Marcia bought some green Sunbrella and made an insert to solve the problem. Pics in our album. A canvas shop could do the same for you for a reasonable price.

RE: comfortable seating for reading. Take the seatback cushion for the forward seat at the table and force/place it against the hull between the table and "dash". I lean against the cushion and put my feet on or against the helm seat for support. The is very comfortable and doesn't take the
time that setting up the bunk/dinette does. You can do the same with the aft seat and put your feet against the counter of the galley.

RE: foam density. Although I am 6' 3"' most of my height is in my legs and I had a hard time seeing comfortably at the helm while running. I did two
things. First, I raised the seat with oak blocks (pics of the project are in a sub-album of our album). That wasn't enough so I had the local canvas
shop put in a heavier density foam in the helm seat. Don't know what density they used. It works great and cost about fifty bucks.

We thought about doing the same with the passenger seat, but decided not to because we were afraid the heavier density might not be comfortable when sleeping.

I'm not sur if you have any window coverings, but the factory option coverings can be easily modified for both privacy and ventilation for very little money. Pics in our album of that mod also.

Hope this helps.

On edit: there is some very weird spacing in my previous post. I couldn't edit it out because it doesn't show anything wrong on the edit screen.

One thing I really appreciate about the Tomcat I bought was that the previous owner (Roy) had a custom made cushion to properly fill the top of the table. For the Tomcat, this is especially critical since the table is trapezoidal. However, if I had another 22, I'd definitely have the cushions re-done. Also, I might have some extra cushions made to make the seats a more proper depth for seating. They're a bit deep - especially for my wife or other people with shorter legs.
