Sue and I were thinking of heading down into the valley for some heat...
We were thinking of spending a week on Shasta Lake.....

Anyone want to join us ? Possibly put in at Bridge Bay Marina on Wednesday and spend a week...just enjoying the sun and the warmth.
It's still too cold up in the mountains.... hailed today

Joel-

Wish I could join you, but my arm is in a cast from recent surgery.*

It's been windy and cool here the past week, but is supposed to heat up to 95 or so starting next Wednesday. Blew 50 mph in the gusts a couple of days ago, taking a lot of limbs and a few trees down with it. Snowed on Morgan Summit yesterday!

The lake is within a foot or two of 100% full, so there aren't many beaches or landings for boats, but it's still OK and very beautiful!

*I had a dime sized melanoma on my elbow (out of sight), but it's been removed along with a lymph node and all tests show no spreading/metastasis. My arm is in a cast to protect a 2 inch diameter skin graft necessary after a generous excision of the tumor.

Have fun!

Hi Joel,

Going to get some heat is right - 100F on Thursday! We would enjoy meeting up with you if it works out. I am not very familiar with Shasta and not up on the fishing options. Let me know what you decide.

Where would be a good spot to launch ?
There are several ramps at Lakehead, one at Antlers Campground right next to I-5, another at Lakeshore, and others depending on water level. Bridge Bay is my favorite, and most center located. There are also nice ramps at Packer's Bay, Jones Valley, and Centimudi.

Any nice restaurants on the lake ?
If you had dinner before in Lakehead, that would be OK. Bridge Bay is expensive and only so-so to less(!) Otherwise, drive to Redding.

Thoughts on fishing ? Trout trolling is good. from the surface to 30 feet, depending on time of day, using flashers and small lures. Bass fishing is tough, since the water has come up so much recently and there's a lot of natural food in the water.

Thanks

Joel-

Hee's an update on the fishing copies from a newsletter I received: (1 week old).

Shasta Lake Bass: The lake is still rising. Currently we are at 4 feet from the crest. The bass fishing is pretty good with top water working early in the morning. After that, go to plastic worms and tubes in natural colors. Lots of quality fish are starting to show up. Points and steep walls are producing right now.
Trout: The trout fishing still is excellent. The better areas are around the main body of the lake. Kastmasters, Wiggle Hoochies, Pee Wee Hoochies and Rapala plugs in the CD7 and CD5 size are still working.

My top trout trolling lures in the spring are 1) broken back rapalas in any color but I really like the fire tiger or the rainbow trout. 2) Small f7 flat fish. Only buy gold and silver. If the sun is out troll the silver, if it’s over cast troll the gold. You can use down riggers but in the spring with a raising lake the trout will be on top in the morning and afternoons, A little deeper during the day. I like to flat line the lure’s this time of year. Just let them out behind the boat without a down rigger. Both of these lures will dive to about 5 to 15 feet depending on line size and speed of the boat. If you feel that your lures are too far behind the boat than double the distance and you might be getting close to where you should have them. I have trolled f7's 300 to 600 yards behind the boat. Make lots of big long wide s turns while trolling. Drive out and around points then turn into them so your long lined lures cross of the tops of the points or boulders.

Ok number one trout trolling tip of all time. If you are trolling as stated above and you get a hit and a miss, trout swiped at your lure but did not get hooked, shift into neutral and wait for your lure to float to the top of the water. As soon as they do break the water’s surface put the boat back in gear. You will get hit again 50% of the time. If you just keep trolling you will not get hit by that fish again. Half of the time as the lure floats up and half the time just after putting the boat in gear. Does not work with spinners or troll blades, but speeding up for three seconds does.

Ok one more tip. If you are trolling flasher, cowbell etc with a worn rig after it, Wedding ring, uncle john’s, etc.., Use a small white or root beer colored curly tail grub plastic worn ( one inch long if that) much better than a real worm. If you have to be old school and use a real worm only use half and don't leave much handing behind the hook.
