Just rented a place in Beach Haven NJ in August. Plan is to trailer the C-Dory and explore this area. Anyone have experience with the bays in this area. Things to see? Good fishing? Anyone ever put their car, boat and trailer on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry?

You will be on the Barnagat Bay which is part of the ICW-you can cruise "inside" South to Cape May and as far North to Pt. Pleasant/Manasquan area.

Would suggest you get charts as the area is very navigational but you have to pay attention to aids to navigation- either way North or South is nice cruising- Atlantic City is an easy, sorta long one day and back trip with plenty of transient slips-The time of year you will visit is Green Head Fly Season-they are tough-I have a screen that I have over the cabin door that has resolved this problem while under way.

Barnagat Inlet-your nearest inlet to the ocean has a reputation as being difficult- would definitely seek out boaters who use this inlet on a regular basis for the most up to date info.

You will have a nice time.

With regard to the ferry, reservations are a must if you have a vehicle. Check their website. Regarding Beach Haven, check with C-Brat Dave Deem (Will-C). He knows a lot about the Jersey Shore and it's waters.
Remember, it's "down da shore", never "the beach"!

Stan -
Barnegat Bay is a world-class birding area. We have spent many hours, sitting drifting and anchored overnight on our boat in the beauty of the Bay, and along the bays of the Jersey Coast fascinated by the variety of birds and their antics - especially in the Spring nesting season when they are displaying and building nests.

Of course, your bays along the Atlantic coast of Florida are a treasure, also. And Deland is such a beautiful small town -- one of our favorites. You have such great boating in your state -- the St Johns River, Okeechobee, the Glades, Keys, Dry Tortugas, Panhandle and West Coast of the state. We hope you will have the time to cruise them all and enjoy your C-Dory.

Thanks to everyone for their information. Everyone has been very helpful and I do look forward to getting out and exploring on the our new C-Dory. Personally wish I had discovered C-Dory years ago. As the expression goes better late than never.

Stan,
We were just in Beach Haven yesterday. The public ramp is in good shape but be careful leaving the ramp area and heading over to the inter coastal waterway as it can be very shallow follow the markers. Holgate the next town south of Beach Haven still has some houses on there sides as a result of Sandy. Everywhere else seems to be getting back to normal. The Little Egg Inlet is your closest inlet. It's a good place to drift for flounder using a strip of squid and a killy (minnow) on the same hook. Weakfish are around and crabbing is good at the mouths of the creeks on incoming tides using bunker or chicken necks. When crabbing break up a blue claw crab and use half of it hooked thru the leg sockets minus the claws on a light rod and toss it out behind the boat as weakfish are great eating. I would think a trip up Tuckerton Creek would be interesting. There is a museum worth seeing up at the end of the creek. Further down from the inlet there is Great Bay. If you follow the inter coastal down to marker 139 you can make a right turn on a heading of 305 for a mile or so then you should be able to see the day markers to Oyster creek and investigate the Oyster Creek which has a dandy restaurant called Oyster Creek Inn where you can dock up and have a great lunch or dinner. Nacote Creek is also a nice little side trip. As is the Mullica river. It get hot there in August. If your a night owl you can pick a spot south of the inlet (Grassy Channel) on a out going tide a catch some pretty decent sized brown sharks. See the link to the wildlife preserve, http://www.fws.gov/northeast/forsythe/
also Scotts Bait and Tackle on Mystic Island is the best local bait shop that has internet presence and will help you catch fish or crabs. http://www.scottsbt.com/ No not that kind. :) You are going to a great place, have fun! You will need to sign up for a free fishing salt water registration. go here www.nj.gov/dep/saltwaterregistry/index.html
