Shopping for C-Dory

One thing I prefer of the cruiser over the angler is the ability to lock up the cabin. Of course for security reason's this would only keep and honest thief out but it does provide additional protection for your electronics and other items especially if you live in a real salty area as I do. Keeps the dxxx sea gulls out too!

What is the thinking concerning the twin engine scheme vs. a main + kicker? Is the twin primarily for safety should one fail in a tight spot?

Looking at used boats, what is considered the hour life expectancy of the larger Honda four strokes, ie: 40, 50, 75, 90 hp?

Ken, there have been numerous discussions on the Single vs. Twins dilemma over the years on the site. If you go to the "Search" on the heading of this page and enter Twins vs. Single etc. you should be able to access about a weeks worth of reading on the subject.

For me, it is Twins.....why? ...because I dated twins in high school...

Ken, after posting the above suggestions to you, I tried "Twins vs. Single" in the search engine and discovered that it may not be real easy to locate those threads. You'll probably have to scan down all the pages that those key words hit on until you see titles that would contain the info. you are seeking.

Maybe someone else can come up with a better suggestion in order for you to resurrect the appropriate discussions.

Part of the problem is that some words are used over and over again, and come up in all kinds of discussions, like twins, single, kicker, trailer, radar, GPS, electronics, antenna, wiring, bulkhead, fuel, tank, gunnel, anchor, rode, etc., and make searches within that word topic much more difficult.

To the extent that it's possible, it's always useful to narrow the search down by putting in a more or less unique word which will at least somewhat only be found in the discussions you're looking for, such as Garmin, SeaStar, Dickinson, EPIRB, Sirius, Flathead (Lake), Apalaciacola, blisters, coaxial, searchlight, handrail, LED, etc.

You can also go to the Forums, look at the topical layout/classification scheme, and scan and then search the list of discussion threads within the most obvious topic area.

The search engine can also be directed to look only within certain Forum topics, so as to not come up with random usage hits all over the place.

Note this from the Search Engine page:

"Search for Keywords:
You can use AND to define words which must be in the results, OR to define words which may be in the result and NOT to define words which should not be in the result. Use * as a wildcard for partial matches."

Thus if you use

single and twins and kicker

you get 15 hits on one page that all refer to the subject you want. Try it. (I couldn't make a link with the contained input information.)

It also helps to read through the interesting topics in the Library Forums with spare time, to read as much of the discussion traffic here on the site as you can, and remember what you've read and who said it to whatever degree possible.

Hope this helps!

Joe. :teeth :thup

Ken, Don't just define your search to Honda engines. All of the 4 strokes are excellent engines. In some commercial operations over 4000 hours are usual, and some places reporting over 8,000 hours on 4 stroke outboards. The type of running would be charter boats, or law enforcement/Coast Guard, where the engines are run every day, and well maintained.

I personally prefer a single with kicker. Not many of the twins will bring the boat back on a plane; if it does, it may be lugging the engine. The kicker is useful for fishing, and in some cases for the dinghy. The weight is more with twins, and the maintance often more. But there are arguements for the twins also, such as maneuverability. (Outboards maneuver so well, that I don't personally see that as much of an advantage.)-but this is a personal preference.

Well, we took care of the "shopping for a C-Dory" problem that we had. We purchased a 99 22' Cruiser in FL that we will be hauling back to ID. We look forward to wearing it out. Thanks for all the good advice on this forum.

I live in Oak Harbor, Wa and have a 22 cruiser for sale. I want to move up to the 25. Mine is a 99 model with a Honda 75 and a brand new Tohatsu 9.8 electric start kicker. I have a single axle trailer, GPS, VHF and a porta potti with a deck pump out. It's a basic boat but I've enjoyed it and just want a little bigger boat. I'm probably going to ask 25k but I'm not married to that price.

So, Please tell me a little more about this 99 22 C-Dory Cruiser. Like how many hours on that 75 Honda. What make and model GPS and what is a deck pump out? :) General condition of this dory and trailer. Are there any pictures. Worth a thousand words the say

Steve is just trying to figure out if it is the right color so he can sneak it in again so Pat won't know he has another boat.... I think it was pretty slick how he did it with the 19' and got away with it..... And lived...
