Smarter Tools 2000-Watt Inverter Generator

Generally the Honda's and real Yamaha (including electronics and alternator) do better in the long run. The chinese look alikes come and go--often under "famous" brand names....

This one does look good on paper. It is is still running 30 years later, like one of my early small Honda generators--then it would be a winner. But for $200 or so dollars I would pick Honda or Yamaha, where I could get parts easily.

My thoughts-

Yamaha engine-OK, but is it a standard motor with parts available?

I would check on these things in depth:

1. Technical assistance- Call them and see 1). if they're really "there", & 2). what they can tell you about this unit's history so far.

2. Parts- Available? Where? How soon can they be delivered?

3. Warranty- Read the fine print. For three years…??? What then?

4. Does anyone else sell and/or service this unit?

5. Price difference with the Honda…..worth the risk differential?

Well, this is the "generator of the month." Sorry, but someone asks " how is this generator, it's cheaper?" quite often. And the answer is "how are we supposed to know?" For the last 10 years, I've run my Honda 1000i.

And indeed this one is $260 cheaper or about 25%, of a "Yamaha" generator. This one even has the name "Yamaha" on the control panel, and apparently Yamaha 7DX Engine is a Yamaha engine. Also, as a matter of fact, the Home Depot web site advertises about 4 different 2000 Watt generators ranging from $400 to $870. I've never heard of any of them before. And, I don't know where any are made, but you can check the generator. If it says China, buy it and then tell us how it was.

Since Home Depot is selling it, I have 2 thoughts. First, it's made in China. Second that leads to the thought that Yamaha generators are made in China. But, I don't know.

I DO know that people with Honda generators are happy. If they change the oil often.

BTW, BMW has China making their vertical twin motors, by Kymko. And, I suspect their scooters. So, thataway, sea wolf and I may be behind the times. I don't think so, yet.

Better yet, tell us how it is now and then a year later, if you use it often, tell us how it is then.
