Snap Tool

Hey all, I am looking for a tool that installs stainless snaps. I saw one on the Westmarine site for about $35 and it has terrible reviews....

[http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=17049&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10112&subdeptNum=10676&classNum=10677]

Anyone have any better leads or suggestions?

Thanks
Peter

HI Peter:

We have the less expensive Sailrite Snap Fastener Deluxe Installation Tool, and it works fine for about $30.

They have videos at Sailrite.com that show the proper use of this tool.

We also bought a hole punch cutter tool that is a lot easier to use than an awl, when making the proper size hole (there's a video on this one, too).

Finally, Sailrite has a very wide selection of snap fasteners in a variety of materials.

Hope this helps.

I have a set of dyes which fit on the jaws of square jaw vise grips. These are not quite as good as the Press and fit--but are less than half the price for about $60 for a set of four. (which will cover most snaps you will use--my set has 8, but for several different sizes. These are available from Sailmakersupply.com. Like many tools, you will use these multiple time thru the years and worth buying.

I'll second Bob, those dies that fit on vise-grips work well, and beat the hammer and anvil type. Defender has a set of those for $38:

Time Saver Tool Grip Fast Kits
# Designed for Installing Buttons and Snaps
# Includes Vise Pliers and (2) Pairs of Matching Plastic Dies
# Sets Snaps Fast and Easy, without Pre-punching Holes
Item #: 753173

BTW, I've never been able to insert Defender URL's for parts. If anybody can tell me how, I'd appreciate that.
