Snowing again - biggest snow flakes I've ever seen

It's snowing again in Kenmore only today the snowflakes are HUGE. The average size is better than an inch across and some are as big as 2". They're floating down softly - big delicate flakes that look like paper ash coming down. Never seen anything like these. I took a few pictures but it doesn't do it justice.

Here's a picture from the front stoop - you can see the flakes that are out of focus (close to me) are huge.

Here's one that hit the porch and I tried to take a picture of it before it melted. I put my finger in the shot for scale and circled the area that was covered with one flake. That's one BIG flake (and I'm not talking about the guy attached to the finger).

We also have snow here in the foothills and would guess six inches of wet heavy stuff. Bad part is cleaning off the tv dish so I can get my Sunday news fix..

Well Roger, it's snowing in the front yard, but not the back! The flakes are just too huge to make it through the tall cedars. No kidding. Is this a good thing?
 
Working in Seatac now (on wireless). It was really coming down at about 0800 hours. Big flakes covering even the roads. Just freezing rain now. :roll:

Know what you mean, Jim. We're suffering through 73 degree weather with a heat index of 77, 4 mph breeze and 10 miles visibility here near San Diego. (sigh)

Those WA snowflakes are not so big. Here in ID they are the size of softballs, with the occasional basketball size flake. You have to be very careful not to trip over them. Small children and pets have been covered by single flakes. There has been no need to mention them in the past, until WA folks felt the need to start bragging.

Someone from WA bragging about snowflakes is like someone from ME bragging about Salmon.

Last season's big Salmon news here was that a 13" landlocked salmon was caught in Sebago Lake the hard way.
A guy caught a 44" pike from his dock. When he cleaned it he found a 13" Salmon in its stomach. Our lake Salmon populations have died with the introduction of Pike and other species.

Oh yeah, we still have 2' of snow with 6' banks in our yard.

I've seen a lot of snow from my days back in the suburbs of Chicago but never falling in such huge flakes. It was just a really unusual type of snow - I knew the photos wouldn't do it justice so you'll just have to believe me that the flakes were unusually large (probably even by Idaho standards). Regardless, it transitioned to rain and all melted by afternoon. Now we're just having 30-60MPH gusts, and pouring rain that is interrupted by high winds and sunshine or the occasional snow squall that melts when it hits the ground. Cable TV is out, the electricity is threatening to go off and the DSL still works (until we lose power).

I agree about the size of the snowflakes. Even my wife said they were the biggest she's ever seen! I can't say I have much snowflake experience having grown up in San Francisco, but I agree they were big.

Also, like you mentioned after the snow came the wind. I can't get used to that up here in the PNW. The wind plus the multitude of huge trees surrounding my house really puts the fear of Mother Nature in me. Thank goodness my 3 year old was around to comfort me :cry
