SOS LED distress signal

Just got the new June/July BoatUS magazine and I see there is an article in that about "flares" including the Sirius LED flare replacement device.

Enjoy

When my current flares expire I will probably get one of three lights just to be legal. I will also probably keep some flares, but I won't have to worry about being caught with out of date ones. If you don't live near a marine supply store, approved flares can be a pain to obtain (hazardous shipment).

I too have been looking at these new lights. Way overpriced right now (probably because they can...) I like the idea of no expiration date on them, which I suppose relative to the cost of the flares, make them worth it. However, in practical conditions, I still think the flares are going to be more visible to possible rescuers or reporters. Especially if you are in any kind of waves. Therefore I have chosen to forego the lights at this time. I do carry one of those smaller LED lights on my vest, for use after the flare attracts attention! :-) Colby
