South Sound Oil Spill

I'm saddened and sickened to see the photos and read about the extent of oil spilled in and northwest of Commencement Bay. (Tacoma).

Has anyone been out to see first hand the damage created?

There is an article in the morning Tacoma paper with sickening pictures.
http://www.thenewstribune.com/ KIRO and KING also have many pictures on their web sites.

I am really ticked that it took so long for the response teams to get on the water. There was a ten foot tide between the first report and daylight and this managed to spread a reportedly small "spill" into a huge mess. It was foggy, but if you can't respond to an oil spill in some fog-that is a very bad thing. Let's hope for a quick clean-up and as little damage as possible.

I just talked to Citizens for a Healthy Bay and tried to volunteer. Because the spill is bunker C oil which is toxic, they can not use anyone until they get an ok from higher ups. I am on the list when and if they need folks.
The phone number for Citizens for a Healthy Bay is 253.383.2429. They will be in their office all weekend to answer questions and to organize volunteers if needed. Robbi

On our daily walk along the waterfront here in Gig Harbor, Evelyn and I went to the overlook at the old ferry landing. Most noticeable was a yellow floating barrier restricting the entrance to GH. Looking out with binocs across Dalco Passage to Commencement Bay, Washon Island, and Quartermaster Harbor, we could see no apparent clean-up activity. A helicopter did fly over. Fewer than usual recreational boaters were in sight. Also, our GH public dock which usually fills up fast on a weekend had only a couple of boats secured. Sure wouldn't want Brave Heart getting that mess on her pretty bow.
