Spare Prop?

Ill chime in too...

Yes, definatly carry a spare, an aluminum one that can be banged roughly into fair usable shape in can I damage that one on the same trip also.

I did like Bob suggests. I got a spare aluminum prop when I picked up Kerri On. I like aluminum as if I do hit something hopefully the drive train survives intact and the prop bends. Stainless props can survive real hits but bend drive shafts. Props are cheaper. I had my spare 13 1/4 by 17repitched to 131/4 by 15 for Powell It will be fine as a coastal spare also. Easy to swap out from docks, dingies or beaches. George

For the first 5 years, no spare prop -- -- but I was running ProPulse, a composite blade replaceable system. I did have an extra hub and 4 blades, all the makings of a spare prop.

THEN
In one weekend I went through 2 blades on one prop and then 24 hours later, within 200 feet of the same place on planet earth and after the appropriate 4 tidal changes in 80 feet of water, I had the same thing happen. Some kind of fibrous filament, the pieces left were only a couple of inches long, took out 2 more blades and a hub.

It looked like the fiber worked it's way between the hub and prop and snapped the blade right off --> AS IN GONE  so time to consider some alternative to "plastic". Long story short. now I have 2 spare hubs and 6 blades. but the best part is that with some help from Matt at Kitsap Marina, I now have aluminum props that are more appropriately sized and pitched, and they are very nice. YUP sometimes I'm a little slow, but I do finally get it. BTW, I have the extra cotter pins, wrench, washers and a spare nut -- not counting the one behind the wheel :P

Lots of good advice here.

Everybody is going to bend a prop sometime and it can create damaging vibrations.

Prop, thrust washer, cotter pin.

You'll need a wrench.

My OMC likes a 3/8" drive, 3" extension, and appropriate socket.

Needle nose pliers are nice for the cotter-pin.

These show up on E-Bay once in a while.
