OK, Bill suggested a way to speed up Ubuntu was to disable IPv6. In searching around I found a lot of information on disabling IPv6 system wide, but it can also be disabled specifically in Firefox, and it really does speed the sucker up - try it and see if you don't agree. This works in Windoze as well as Linux, and I presume on the Mac as well (will try it there next). In the Firefox address bar, type in "about:config" (without the quotes, eh?). In the Filter box, type in IPv6. You will now see only "network.dns.disableIPv6" - right click on the value "False" and toggle it to "True." That's it ...try it, you'll like it!

Camino (built for Mac on top of Firefox) came with that value default set to True.

FWIW.
