Just saw a news flash that indicated that the free parking is going away during boating season. Another sign of the times.

David,

Thanks for bring this to my attention. I'll check with the port office & find out what's happening. I know that the port has increased the moorage fees between April and October.

Ruth and Joe, I just clicked on your album and took a look at the "new" 22. Is your "new' 22 Cabernet? We will have to moor the wine boats together at Bellingham.

I see on the Squalicum Harbor site that the transient fee will be 75¢ per foot during the season. A 50% increase, but still a pretty good deal. Still the 3 day max for transients. Any idea what the parking (long and short term) will be?

Best wishes,
Jim

$3 parking fee to be added at Everett boat launch

By Mike Benbow, Herald Writer

EVERETT — The Port of Everett is adding a $3 parking fee to its 10th Street boat launch, meaning it will cost boaters and anglers $8 to use the facility starting May 1.

The fee will be in addition to the $5 launch price.

The parking fee will also apply to people who don't use the launch and just want to visit the marine park or to hop onto the popular ferry to Jetty Island.

The parking fee will be applied between May 1 and Sept. 30 each year to pay for the area's maintenance and operation, said John Mohr, executive director of the port.

He noted that during the last two years, the port has spent $600,000 to redo the rocks that check erosion and make other park improvements. It will spend $600,000 this winter to dredge the area of sediment pouring in from the nearby Snohomish River, which saw several floods in recent years.

“This has all got to be paid for, and that's what we're doing,” Mohr said Tuesday.

Mohr's comments came during a Tuesday meeting of the port commission in which several fishermen complained about the upcoming fee hike.

“We can hardly afford to go fishing as it is,” said Ted Measor. “Everywhere we turn, somebody wants money.”

Mohr said the port spends about $216,000 a year on the boat launch and collects about $115,000 with the $5 launching fee. As part of the change, the port has installed new machines that will take credit cards. It will also sell a $75 seasonal parking pass for frequent users. And it will continue to sell a $150 launch pass that does not include parking.

Peter Hatch told the commissioners that he's a retired sports fisherman who sees fees everywhere he turns. “Where does it stop?” he asked. “When does the little guy stop bearing the burden we're bearing? We won't be able to go anywhere.”

Measor said he understood that maintaining the launch cost money. “But we keep seeing our costs go up and up and up and this is the worst time for that.”

Sign of the times indeed. Whatcha gonna do? :| At least the fees collected will go to back into the boating facilities; maintainance, upgrades etc and not into some general fund.

David, Yes, the 'new' 22 is the same color as your boat although in some photos it looks more 'red'....

Jim, As to the parking fees (long and short term), we're going down to the port office first thing in the morning and ask them about it. When there was a price increase on the moorage I was pre-warned about that because our neighbor is on some committee and told me ahead of time...but he didn't say anything about the parking lot fees when I saw him the other day but then he has his own slip so parking isn't of any concern to him. I know the port has installed some new signs that say "Long Term Parking"......Well, we sure had it good for a long time without any parking fees.

I don't think $8 is out of line for launch and parking at Everett. It seems reasonable to ask those using the facility to pay for it's upkeep. As Mark pointed out, at least the fees go back into the facility.

Everett is one of the best facilities anywhere. The whole port, from the ramp, the marina, right up to the Naval Base is a model that other waterfront communities would do well to emulate. I'm glad they are putting in credit card readers. It was a pain iin the neck to show up and not have a $5 bill.

Dave-Haven't you heard?

GOOD NEWS ABOUT PARKING FEES PERTAINING TO SQUALICUM HARBOR/BELLINGHAM

:D NO CHARGE TO PARK YOUR VEHICLE & TRAILER :D At least that's the news at the Port of Bellingham and they aren't aware of any changes to the current policy at this time. This pertains to both short and long term parking.

The usual $5.00 launch fee covers one launch and retrieve. This also means that after you've paid your $5 that you can park up to five (5) days in the paved parking lot. Be sure to leave your validated ticket on the dash.

If you plan on being gone longer than five days you will also need to go to the port office (located about 1/2 mile away at 722 Coho Way) and sign up for the LONG TERM PARKING PERMIT. The long term parking lot is located just across the street from the five day parking lot.

Will also post this note in the Bellingham CBGT discussion.

Well THAT's good news.

And that bill may SAY $8, but I believe it's only really worth about $3....almost half is gone off the top via taxes and the rest will be interest on the national debt. :P

I'm terrible.....

Mark-Well you're certainly no more terrible than I am. I think it's just a case of perspective. For instance, the first ambulance I ever worked on was a Dodge Powerwagon, fully equipped with a Stokes basket, a bunch of battle dressings and a few blankets. Let's ask Dave what a fully equipped advanced life support mobile intensive care unit costs today. I would guess it's like that in law enforcement, also a tax supported government agency. I'll bet we agree that it's necessary and money well spent. So, either you're not terrible, or we both are. See you on the water at Everett and Bellingham.

$195,000 for the Medic Unit and approximately $75,000 for the medical equipment on board. (A cardiac monitor that will do 12 lead EKG's, cardiac pacing, and a few other "trick things" costs approximately $25,000). A broken heart.... :unlove ....to a saved heart.... :love ....priceless. :smile

Now to get back on this thread's subject.....

This afternoon, I went to the Everett Marina and obtained my "Senior" launching pass for 2010. (Must be 60 yrs old or over and it is free). Daily parking will be $3.00 extra, however anyone can purchase an annual parking pass for $75.00. (If you park there more than 25 times, you are money ahead.....plus you don't have to mess with those mechanical ticket machines).
