Sta-Bil ethanol treatment

I saw a 32 oz container of this product at West Marine ($19.99). The printed instructions say use one oz. per 10 gallons of gas but the guy at West Marine said to use 2 oz. for 5 gallons. Comments??
 
My jug says 1 oz/10 gals. for normal use and 1 oz/5 gals. for system cleanup or storage. I think using 2 oz/5 gals. would only benefit the guy selling the stuff. I use it in my cans for lawnmowers and other small engines at the 2 oz/5 gals. mix. I can let you know next spring how that works for me.

I have used ethanol free gas from the Port of Astoria fuel dock all season. The coat is about $35 per fish. How does that compare with Safeway's fish price?

Other than that how you doing? I didn't get up to Cathlamet this year. Did you have your boat there for the summer again?
 
Mike...I started using ethanol free gas (from fuel docks on the water - no ethanol-free gas close to me in Portland) this year but sometimes if the docks are closed I have to improvise. LOL...remember I still have boat operating costs even when I catch my fish at Safeway!!
I just brought the boat back to Tomahawk Island (from Cathlamet) yesterday. The last two years have been excellent for weather there...we've had a few clear mornings even!! It was 92 and sunny yesterday...on the way back up the river I saw more people on the beaches than I ever have. Collins Beach (the nudist beach on Sauvie Island) must've had 400 people!!
 
We have been recomending Sta Bil Marine Formula for some time now, and it seems to be doing a good job of helping with ethonal related issues. We don't recomnend anything stronger than the manufacturer's 1 oz. in 5 gallong recomendation.
 
I have been using StaBil Marine Formula Ethanol Treatment (the dark stuff) for the past 3 years in my 150 hp Suzuki engine. Each year in July I replace the fuel/water separater with a new one and when I dump the contents of the old one out into a bucket there is no water in the filter. I usually keep 40 to 50 gallons year around in the 100 gallon tank and only fill up when I am going on a cruise.

The directions say 1 oz to 10 gallons of fuel. I put in 3 oz and 20 gallons of gas. StaBil says that more won't hurt. I also use StaBil in the gas in my lawn equipment.

So far so good and I am happy. :lol:
 
Since buying our boat from Matt I've religiously used the blue Sta-bil according to the ratios on the bottle. I double the ratio as recommended for winter storage. SO FAR, no fuel related issues and we do not boat during winter, so the boat sits on the trailer in the driveway. Last yr I stored it w/ about 3/4 tank and it started on the first try when "spring" arrived here.

I also use it in my mower, power washer, gen set etc for winter storage. I'll usually fill the tanks after the last use, run the engines for about 10 minutes to make sure the new fuel mix gets through the carbs and then shut the fuel and let the engines run until they die. Same thing; so far, no issues.

EDIT: It's a lot cheaper @ Fred Meyer too. FYI.
 
I would like to echo what 'AU KAI' stated. I, too, use the storage level of stabil in my lawn mower, snow thrower, portable generator and until it was sold -- Yamaha 4 HP kicker. My garage gets pretty hot in the summer, but I never drain the carburetors -- just start the motors and run them for a few minutes every 45 days or so. Not once in all these years have I had a problem.
 
I had used the maintenance level of the red Stabil (I had used only ethanol free gas), but I also added the maintenance amount of Startron. Does it make a difference? Not sure, but there is some evidence it helps. Even with ethanol free gas, you need to use a fuel stabilizer. The blue is for ethanol containing fuel.
 
I avoid the stabilizer mess and purchase my gas at the fuel dock in Newport. No ethanol and stabilizer added with a advertised shelf life of 12 months stated on the pump.
However the stuff is $4.69 a gallon so my per fish price is way more than Tyboo's or Chuck's. We caught 2 coho for $199.00 a couple weeks ago.

The previous owner of Lady KC used Stabil
but we have since filled up at Valtech dealers
and have thus added Valtech after each fuel fill ups.

Question.....should I still add Stabil product
along with the Valtech product.

Any input would be appreciated.......

Bill, I don't think it can hurt. I use both Stabil and Startron and haven't had a problem since I started using it. B4 that, I had probs with water separation with Ethanol gas in the 45HP Hondas on the CD 22. None on the TC.

Stevej - Filled up again today and caught one more fish. Fuel cost is now $39.71/fish. But those are only the legal ones. Not shakers or natives or out of season fish. If I counted them all I think ODFW would owe me money.

C-Nile - What's a snow thrower? :lol:
 
A snow-thrower -- in the Connecticut wilderness, that's another word for snowblower, and we sure had a lot of snow this year to throw, blow, eject or otherwise expel.

Never have, but per the website it does stabilize fuel.

As a fuel system additive, Sea Foam® will clean carburetors, fuel injectors, clean carbon, gum and varnish deposits, add lubricity to fuel, stabilize fuel for 2 years and control moisture.

I don't think Seafoam has any properties that would help with Ethonal water absorbsion, but we don't have a lot of experience with the product in our neck of the woods.

Why should you use a stabalizer product? Well, we figure that our customers have spent far in excess of $50,000 this year in ethonal related repairs and engine failures. We will not be surprised if that number reaches $100,000 by year's end. :x

So you can spend an extra $10 a tank, just in case, or take your chances. I guess you just have to ask youself this one thing- do I feel lucky. Well, do you? :wink:

Ethonal is evil stuff :evil: , and has no business being in gasoline.
 
Sea foam only for cleaning injectors (and similar other passages which may be plugged by ethanol loosened debris. I do add sea foam several times a year.

For those of us who park the boat for the winter (4-6 months) it sounds like the "Sea Foam" might be a good idea for an early tank in the spring, when the whole tank is going to get run through on a weekend. "Clearing the pipes" as they say. Thanks Dr Bob.

I saw this product on a segment of the TV show "Ship Shape TV". I have not tried it yet, but plan to when I run out of my supply of Blue Stabil.
