Stainless steel plate

does anyone know where I can get some stainless steel plate? I need a piece about two by two feet for the spot light on the bow. A friend is going to weld it for me, all I need it the plate and cheap or free is my type of price. Some scrap or even a old restaurant counter. I will take what I can get. After coming to the dock on less then star light the last two trips the admiral want a light.

Well....if you were a bit closer to NC I'd tell ya to come by my shop!
I'd check the local scrap metal yards, most around here will alow you to scrounge around and find a piece.
If all else fails...contact me if you're willing to pay shipping.

I have not found a scrap yard near by yet. I just did another search on craigs list and found a lot fo cheap sinks... So are big enough for me to cut up and use maybe.

I'd try a metal fab shop for a piece of scrap. Someone who makes restaurant counters or exaust hoods. They just might give it to you, and if they don't. At least you will not have to buy a 4X8 sheet.

I've been toying with the idea of using starboard material instead of stainless. If a guy was handy enough you could even rout out a concave edge to mate up flush with the inside of the bow rail and fasten it with a couple of screws from the bottom inside. Another way of attaching might be using bimini top hardware that fastens around the bow rail tube material and then use the eye piece end with a bolt to hold the starboard base. Two thicknesses of starboard could be sandwiched together to conceal wiring if you really wanted to get fancy. With all the white plastic on a C-Dory and maybe a white plastic light it might look pretty good! I am trying to get around the discoloration and down time that might occure with welding too. Just a thought.

Tom, they don't let us buy scrap from the mill anymore, so all I have is this one piece of 14ga 316 SS. It's cut to fit the point of the bow rail on a CD22 - is that ok? Way back when I had my '87 22 I had this hairbrained idea to put a spotlight on the front. I cut two of these plates, mounted the light to one and clamped it on for a trial. I figured if I liked it I would weld the other plate on. The light quit working so I took it off and never used the second one.

It is kinda scratched and sad looking because I use the two of the things, along with a heavier chunk of SS, to hold the crabs down in the water when I cook 'em. But being 316 grade, it will polish up like a mirror if you want to put in the effort.

PM me a mailing address and I will see if I can get it to the post office and drop it in a bubble mailer. I'll come up with something good for you to owe me  .

OK - I just hope the crabs don't get out of the boiling water.

Fairbro's idea of the bimini rail parts reminded me that's what I used to hold the trial one on. I tell you what - maybe I ought to send both plates so you can test it before welding, since the one plate already has the holes for the rail clamps. One plate weighs 1.6 pounds, so just over 3 pounds shouldn't be too bad to mail.

This isn't 2' square like you said you were looking for. It is about 15" wide on the long side and just over 8" to the point of the bow. Also, I am not sure the bow rails on your '05 and my '87 are the same. If it doesn't fit, I will give you a full refund.

Starcrafttom,

Okay, it takes a guy from Fresno, CA, to help out a C-Brat in the Northwest. The best kept secret in stainless is Onlinemetals.com They are located in your backyard! They only like to sell pieces and they have lots of Type 316 stainless, which is what you want on a boat, not the Type 304 most welding shops use.

George

George, thanks for the site link. seems they have every thing and lots of info aobut what the differant types of metals really are and what they can be used for. Thanks.

Well It's nice to have friends around here. I have been wanting to install a spot light for while, figure it would get susan to stop whining every time I come in late. I was figuring on $400 for the light , $200 for the plate and another $200 to get it welded. $800 plus project. Well Mike is sending me the plate, a buddy with a auto shop is doing the welding for free and I found the go light with two remotes, one on dash and one hand held, for $150 on craigs list. Only problem is that it was in tacoma. Well I have friends in the south end. So I called Dave thompson and he meet the guy and checked it out for me and got the guy down to $75. Well now I will have a light on the bow for $75 not $800. Nice to have friends around here. Oh if anyone is driving from tacoma to everett in the next week?????

Dave and Mike thank you again :thup :thup :thup

Dave-

I always knew you were an opportunist at heart!

So what do you want for a little mouth-to-mouth, oxygen, or a paddle job when you've got a victum at work? Do you take MasterCharge, Visa, personal checks, or IOU's?

You firemen are all alike!

Joe.

Opportunist, absolutely!....that is how you avoid the flames...choose the path available at the moment!

Joe, the mouth to mouth with the selected female is great and always appreciated, the oxygen to sustain life is necessary and the paddle job.....well....a little kinky..and can be a bit shocking.. ... :wink...but obviously may be necessary to get life in sync... :thup

As to the financial side of things, "cash and carry", I'm always happy to assist, so normally I don't charge, however in Tom's case, it was difficult to observe such a great deal that he had managed to procure, so I thought that I would assist him in a manner that I felt would best ease his conscience from guilt...you know....looking out for the other guy. :wink

Guilt?? marines dont have guilt. I will drive down some time in the next week to pick up my light and take dave to lunch. All i have to do now is figure how to run the wires.

I was thinking of going thru the rail at the light and come out thru the bottom of the rail and into the cab. Has any one done this and how did you find the bottom of the rail from inside the cab? just center on the rail bolts??
