Substitute for Dri-Deck

All,

I was at Home Depot on Thurs and spotted a material very similar to Dri-Deck - 12" x 12" pieces of rubber flooring (black only) that interlock like dri-deck. $10/ 10 tiles or about 1/5 the price of dri-deck. For those doing a new floor or looking for drier feet in the cockpit, this is a good deal.

Also, I bought a mat at Lowes that fits almost perfectly between the tanks on a CD 22'. Black rubber mat about 1/2 " thick with a honey-comb like material. A little over $3 for the mat and all I needed to do was trim about 1/8" off both sides to get a perfect fit. Will keep the cooler in place nicely.

I bought some of these tiles last night and installed them in the cockpit early this AM. They are called "Multy Tiles" (yes that's the way they spelled it). Ten 12" x 12" tiles in a box for $10 - sold in the flooring area of the Bothell Home Depot. They are about 2/3 as thick as Dri-Deck tiles and only come in one color. However, they have a nice parquet like pattern, interlock as tightly as dri deck and cost about 1/5 as much dri deck.

Prior to buying these I had 3 x 4 squares of blue dri-deck when I realy should have bought 4 x 5.5. The price of the dri-deck put me off so I never really had the floor as covered as I would like. With the Multy-tiles, I was able to redo the entire cockpit floor for $30 which is less than the cost of buying the additional dri-deck I really needed. Also, I was left with enough tiles to do a 2'x4' piece that I put down as a front door mat at home. I'll post a pic this evening.

Question, does the rubber leave marks on everything, I have some that I bought at Lowes that the black of the rubber gets on my boots and than ends up on everything?

Roger,
Can you give us a report on how these soften in the sun? The Dri-dek brand got so soft when they warmed up I didn't care for it in the cockpit. Another thing I really didn't like about them is when they were cold(hard) and wet I had it slip under my feet while I was leaned over the gunnel. My foot didn't slip but the whole cockpit floor piece shifted a few inches to the opposite side. No harm was done but I could just see myself taking a header in the drink sometime. I still have and like the Dri-dek in the cabin but I removed it from the cockpit and replaced it with a home-made floor. I would be very interested in your evaluation of this new stuff when you have had more experience with it.

I've got dri-deck that's 10+ years old. I don't like the feeling of it under bare feet, maybe I'm too tender. I put a piece of cheap indoor outdoor carpeting on top of it, soft, drains, dries, shakes out when it gets dirty!

I admit, I don't get fish blood on it (not that I'm not a great fisherman :crook ) but I don't fish from this boat.

I'll let you know when I find out but I think it will behave similarly to Dri-Deck in that regard as the materials are similar. However, since it was cheap enough, I was able to more completely fill the cockpit so it has less space in which to move.

BTW - I "recycled" most of my cockpit dri-deck by putting it on the floor in the cabin. I was using just indoor/outdoor carpeting in there but found that when I was out fishing hard, I would track a fair amount of water into the cabin and the carpeting was always wet near the door. After a few days in the heat and with some fish slime tracked in, the cabin was not exactly sweet smelling and I had to hang the carpet out to dry each day. Hence, I put the dri-deck under the carpet to help keep it drier and to allow it to more easily dry out. I think this will provide enough comfort on the feet and keep things dry too......
