Switch from Directv to Comcast xfinity?

Hi all,

We've been Directv customers for 20 years but are now looking at switching to Comcast Xfinity for cable tv, internet and hardline phone. Anybody done that? pros/cons??

Well, you are going to need a really long long cable to use Xfinity at Sucia!

Actually, we had satellite at Fall City because cable was not available. We had Xfinity from May through December last year while living in our RV in the RV Park in Preston. Cable might have been a little better quality and less influenced by weather but not enough to drive the decision. What should drive the decision is if you can get the channels you want without having to buy a bazillion channels you don't want. I think they are all pretty bad that way.

We are trying to leave Comcast for whatever internet / cable alternative is out there. After 13 years, I am finally ready to leave Comcast due to their price increases and additional inclusion of things we do not need.

I saw the other day that Comcast had regained the top spot for Worst Company in America! YMMV  Happy with Dish at home and RV.

We have used Comcast for only internet for many years in a few locations. The service has always been quite good for us but we have little need to call in for much. We live with only internet plus a blueray player for streaming netflix and couldn't be happier. But we don't watch sports of current TV shows so we are missing out on little. When it comes to plopping down to relax and watch something, we feel like netflix alone is provides plenty of content. That was not the case just 1.5-2 years ago.

What rubs me the wrong way is that they raise the price of internet to $60 / month and claim its a great deal because im getting download speeds of 25XXX

I was just fine with speeds of 7XXX at a lower cost. Essentially they are forcing the higher speeds on you and thereby increasing your bill.

If there is a good way for me to leave them, I am ready more than any time previously.

We ditched them all!

We use an antenna for broadcast TV and a Roku box and internet for streaming everything else.

we went from dish to comcast during a very inexpensive trial run. I think it was $99/month for internet + cable (fully loaded) for a year or two, but then it promptly jumped to $240 and they wouldn't offer any kind of contract renewal discount or anything, so we dropped cable and went back to dish.

our new dish setup is great, DVR records more hours of television than I even watch in a year.

Can you give a comparison of how much $$$ the Dish plan is relative to the similar Comcast offering?

Also, is your internet via the dish as well? If so, how are the speeds and is it reliable?

Thanks

we had comcast at the last house. I got tired of the high price for a lot of stuff i will never watch. I cut everything but the net service. We just watch Netflix and amazon shows as we want. I view all my news from websites and other online sources. I would rather read FOX,NBC,CNN or other sources the watch them.

Ray if you dropped them all how do you get internet?? you have to have a cable provider of some sort??

let me double check with the wife on the exact dish price. I know that when they sold it to us the package included centurylink internet vs comcast which was the complete package (comcast was phone+internet+premium channels, we dropped phone since we both have used our cell phones for a decade now). the new internet service was pretty bad at first but we upgraded to our own router vs their supplied one and it works well now. we watch a lot of netflix and we buy all of our movies through amazon.com now so that we can stream them either at home, or on the kindles (read: on the boat or airplane).

We dropped all of the DirecTV stuff. All we have now monthly is internet and a $7.99 Hulu account.

OK so our DirecTV is $105 with all premium channels, big fat dvr, and the new apps (I have used youtube and pandora surprisingly more than I expected). this does not cover internet or phone. we killed the phone, no need for it, and the internet I think is either 19.99 or 29.99 through centurytel/link. the directv package is exceedingly more than I need, but I am only 1 voice in our household ;) lol.

I think a person these days would be just fine with internet, hulu/netflix really. like I mentioned, I like amazon.com for all movie and music purchases now, because as long as amazon doesn't go away, your digital copies will always exist.

and now that amazon and netflix are starting to create their own tv shows, you aren't stuck with just movies (although its still in its infancy).

Thanks all, its looking like a choice between bad and worse. Directv does not offer bundling where we live so we get three bills, TV, internet, and phone. Comcast will bundle but from the large majority of information I've been able to get on-line and through here we might not want to willingly join with the "worst company in the US".

I have been cord cutting. Here is my setup...

Comcast internet (removed Blast service, as extra speed wasnt used).
Own my cable modem (Motorloa Surfboard)
Leaf HDTV antennae. I have a good western shot to the local antennaes
AppleTV to stream Netflix
Use Airplay from Macbook to AppleTV to stream other stuff.

I got rid of VCR, modem, and recurring Comcast charges related to TV.

I wasn't happy about the debundling when we switched away from comcast but it cut my cost by over 50%, so....

I would just get a good idea of what your cost is going to go up to after the honeymoon phase. some people will just take advantage of the new customer perks and change every 1-2 years. that's more than I want to deal with, lol.

Most of the cable providers do the bait and switch after 12 months hoping you will just pay the extra and not put up a fuss. Comcast did give us a break after complaining and threatening to leave.

We had comcast for years and the internet streaming speed can't be beat, and they also have a great selection of free movies on On Demand.

What drove us crazy was their technical service. If I needed to call for assistance, you were forwarded to some call center in Inda(?), and put on hold forever. It would sometimes take 45 minutes just to get through the call.

We got completely fed up and switched to Wave Broadband. We couldnt be happier. The interent is not quite as fast as comcast but when I've needed to call for assistance, I get someone local to my area and they are so much more helpful and fast. I would not go back to comcast.

I am happy to report that Mary and I have been Comcast-free (with the exception of internet...) for a month. It's Wonderful.

We have had DishNetwork/DirectTV/Comcast and although everything worked, we just felt it was too (toooooooo...) expen$ive for what we were getting. The idea of having a zillion channels, but only watching three or four seemed silly. In fact we would seldom turn on the TV for a week or more.

We now have Comcast hiSpeed internet ($29.95/mo fixed-rate) and use Amazon Prime ($79.95/yr) exclusively for movies and such. We get news off the Internet and enjoy a variety of offerings on Amazon. (We're currently fixated on the TV program "24" and watch the 'tube MUCH more than before.)

From what I've read, we are merely the tip-of-the-iceberg example of millions of customers that are closing their wallets to TV-provider's. It has just become too expensive and too difficult to deal with the support staff.

Year's ago I think I actually read a whole BOOK.

I may even try that again someday! Know any good one's?

Best,
Casey&Mary
