The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

WB was barely enough weight to get the wrinkles out of the slings - compared to the dock queen, summer cottages, it normally lifts...

I dunno, Denny-o, seems like we brought more stuff than usual.

There are some BIG, beautiful boats here. Well, not the sailboat next to us - there is quite a garden growing on that hull, and the dinghy that is tied to it is about half full of water.

A lot of traffic today, even in the smaller slips where we are. Trawler Fest starts in a few days, so I'm sure there will be more big stuff coming in for that.

Fun to see all the boats here, even if some of 'em are just floating cabins.

Back home, our "big" marina has 64 slips (plus stack storage)... oh, and they get $65 per night for a transient slip, even for a boat our size. That's about triple the cost here. I can see why some folks want a "floating cabin" here.

Jim

They hardly ever drop them...
Pat - I think you're thinking of the sling at Anacortes. A few years ago, I remember a piece of the float below that sling was missing due to dropped boat a few days before a Friday Harbor gathering.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy - we are headed out tomorrow after w0rk for B'ham, 1 night at P Dock or maybe anchored in Chuckanut Bay, and then Friday a.m. we'll be on our way to see you in Friday Harbor, Jim! The musical parking spaces thingee sounds fun - NOT!

Jim,

I was surpised to see no Orca pictures (yet) I'm sure your nature(al)ist training course has told you that they are really very big members of the FDD family so you should feel right at home with lots of pictures for Pat.

Hi Merv,

We did see a couple minke whales on the way over, but no Orcas. Right now, we're getting used to the surroundings, barely been here 24 hours. Joan was excited that she can get satellite TV... I told her it wasn't likely with the rise and fall of the docks with the tide... yep, I was wrong. So, she can watch the Today Show, the Tonight Show, and any nature(al)ist shows.

I thought it was only my sailing buddies that didn't understand the difference between a naturalist and a naturist. To save others from looking it up, one means: one versed in natural history, especially zoology and biology. The other means: likes to be nekked. And, you know the difference between naked and nekked? Naked means you have no clothes on; nekked means you have no clothes on and you're up to something. For the record, Joan will be working in the office and doing back-up work on the boat, explaining the natural history, when they need a second naturalist onboard. Odds are pretty good she'll be clothed.

Don't confuse what we'll be doing with our jobs with Naked Cruising Tuesdays... totally separate. 8)

In other fun news: the batteries were not charging when we were plugged in. I've never been a fan of that Guest onboard charger. I downloaded a PDF to troubleshoot... likely blown fuses. That turned out to be the case on one side, but the other is still confounding me. On the bright side, batteries are charging once again. :idea

We did check in with our employers. Our work doesn't start for a couple weeks, but we will probably ride along before then to get a feel for how they do things. We're looking forward to it. Oh, and we're not allowed to take photographs while we're working - the emphasis is on guest experience... so, the f-d whale photos will have to wait until we're out on Wild Blue.

Here's one from our archives...

Jim, I must have missed something along the way... Where are you "working" this summer.. And I use that term loosely considering how much I envy you and how much fun you have...

Still here in downeast Maine for another month or so...

Hi to izzy and the Blonde :love

Charlie

Hi Charlie,

We had planned to spend this summer in the PNW before we were done working last summer. We really enjoyed the Tetons, but the hours were long. Well, after a few months off, footloose and fancy free, Joan really wanted to "do something" this summer... and by that: she likes these summer jobs. She likes being "productive". So, I visited with the folks who run a whale watch company in Friday Harbor that I had talked with when we first applied at the Tetons. I will be driving a whale watch boat and Joan will be working in the office and doing back-up on the boats as a naturalist, when needed. We arrived in Friday Harbor yesterday, and are still getting settled in. We start work on June 1st. Our commitment here isn't as long as the last two summers.

The hours are not supposed to be as extensive as our jobs in the Tetons. (I'm the #3 captain, with two boats.) If all goes as planned, we will still be able to cruise the San Juans on our days off. We're keeping Wild Blue as ready to cruise as possible, but living onboard is different when you aren't moving every day or two. So far, so good... but the 3,000 mile trek here was tiring. Again, not the same as stopping along the way to plunk the boat in when you come across interesting water.

We're looking forward to the C-Brat gathering here later this week. The weather is refreshingly cool here after a hot month in Texas. We've had plenty of sunshine (after driving through snow in Montana! :disgust ), but there is precip in the 10 day forecast. We really enjoy this area - we'll see how we do spending 3 months in one place.

Little Izzy is comfortable on the boat. She is not as "social" as Molly, so hasn't had a big desire to walk the docks, yet. She did great on our several month trip to the Erie Canal, NYC, and the Trent-Severn. She cracked me up tonight...

As far as "the fun"... we don't have to work, so when Joan gets the urge, I try to find jobs that interest us and are in great places. Still, it's work. She likes schedules and keeping busy. I like boats. We'll see how the summer goes. :D

Best wishes,
Jim

While I can't vouch for longevity, after my third Guest (I guess that's why they named them that - "guest") charger on Seaweed, I put in one of these: http://www.geniuschargers.com/GEN2/specs

It was an impressive piece of gear - nearly 6lbs!! 3 year warranty. It (and the documentation) really looked like it meant business. Being a geek, the specs and processing looked really good to me, too - kind of a "Charging. Done right"

It was only in for 3 months when I sold Seaweed, though, so if I don't get a call in the next year from the new owner, I'd say it did allright.

Friday in Friday it is!

Merv - all I need is for Jim to have hundres or thousands of beautiful FDD orca pix, taken in my backyard, when my own collection is mostly pix of holes in the water where whales used to be!

BTW, there is an

Hi Pat, we don't plan to do much driving. See you on Friday... um, in Friday. In the meantime, here's a look at some marina views...

Thanks, Pat. I like to throw in a little goof once in a while so you won't expect perfection all the time.

Ray, that looks like a nice charger - it goes on the list when the current Guest gives it up. Thanks for the link and recommendation. Hope your search for the right 25 is fruitful and soon - there is water out there that needs to be cruised upon.
