That was an excellent write up on research & purchase of an item many who enjoy RVing will benefit from. There are quite a few among us C-Brats that do both the boating & RVing though maybe not quite as much on the go as you & Joan. We now have plans of rigging up our Jeep to be towed with the truck camper, but before purchase of the Jeep, a scooter was high on the list of other options.

Are those making the trip to Friday Harbor Jim? I love scooters too although we are down to just one of those in the garage right now.

That's a definite maybe, Greg. Joan has already picked out a ramp at Harbor Freight, but that means we will loose that truck bed storage with our locking fiberglass tonneau cover. It would be a lot of fun to do some island hopping on the ferry with these bikes. We'll see.
 
I bought a little Yamaha C3 scooter to ride back and forth to the Post Office for my retirement/hobby business and liked it so much that I decided to get something bigger to ride on the highways around Redding and up into the mountains in the summer.

Wound up with a Suzuki Bergman 400, which is pretty much a full sized machine at 440 lbs. I tried to ride a BMW 1200RS, but my lower back and hips went into cramps after about 10 minutes on the thing!

The Bergman 400 is a lot of fun, but there's something in the back of my mind that says that if I ever have an accident on it, It'll take forever and just maybe I'll never recover, having just arrived at 70 years of age last summer.

I used to think I was pretty tough as a young 20 something year old , but half a century later I realize I'm no match for a logging truck on top of me.

Maybe I should say "Uncle!" while I can?

Anyone interested in a 2007 Suzy Bergman with 1300 miles on it? :lol:

Do you have a receiver on the back of the 5th wheel ?
You could put them there if things are strong enough and keep your truck cover on.

Hi Bill,

Yes, the HitchHiker can be ordered with a rear receiver; we sometimes pull an enclosed cargo trailer behind ours. Alas (and how often do you get to use that word?), no way to use a solid fiberglass (color matched) tonneau cover when pulling the 5th wheel. A 5th wheel hitch is in the bed of the truck, and there is no room for scooters in the bed when towing the 5th wheel. So, the only way those scooters are going along on the trip back to Texas is behind the 5th wheel, in a separate cargo trailer. They weigh 286 pounds each, and are 30" wide - too much for a rack back there.

When we pull the boat, we put the solid cover back on. Well, we have in the past. No way to hook the scooters behind the boat, so in the truck bed is the only option if we decide to take them along with the boat.

Well, there is another option...

We regularly tow behind the fifth wheel. I have a smaller fishing boat and also take an open utility trailer for motorcycles, bikes, whatever extra we are hauling on any given trip. I'd not buy a fifth wheel that didn't come with a receiver. It's one of those, "if you build it, it will come things." You will want to tow something sooner or later. I'm also a fan of having the trailer manufacturer do the install. I think a proper install is more likely by the trailer manufacturer.

We began with bumper pull trailers, but wanting to pull two behind made the fifth wheel the only logical choice. Pulling anything behind a bumper pull is a scary exercise.

I love having my fiberglass bed cover for non-fifth wheel towing, but it is a bear to get off, weighs a lot and is a pain to get back on the bed and properly aligned. I've considered the light weight roll up kind of bed cover, BUT, I think that getting into one of those is pretty easy, even for a petty thief.

Looks good up there, Herb! Of course, they weigh 286 pounds each, so that is going to be a tough lift and perhaps have some effect on handling with that weight aloft. :wink: One other difference: your boat is yellow and white, mine is blue and white... that's how I tell 'em apart. :mrgreen:

Getting it down is easy, Charlie: just unstrap it and gravity will take over. Getting it down dry and in one piece is a bit more work, though. :wink:

No boat content, since we are still 1348 miles from Wild Blue.

We scootered to an RV show today. The Blonde is getting tired of "helmet hair" the past couple weeks, and told me she is going to come up with something to help with that.

I kinda laughed that off.

I really shouldn't do that. :wink:
