The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

Jim,

Congratulations on finding a new "right boatcat". Looks adorable and sounds like she is going to work out. When I saw the first picture I thought she looked like a keeper. Glad the boat trip went well.

Merry Christmas and here's wishing you all three, a great New Year.

We took the kids out for a boat ride on the 26th, but have been doing other touristy stuff while they are visiting. This afternoon, two gentlemen came to the door and asked if they could see our boat. I've given plenty of "tours" of Wild Blue, and can usually tell how serious someone is. These guys were great to visit with, appreciated the time, and I could see the look in the eyes of the one who is interested in a C-Dory. I remember seeing that look in the mirror when we were in our discovery stage.

I offered to take the gentleman and his wife out for a ride after our daughter and son-in-law head home. I sure know what it's like to wonder. So, Bob and Herb (if you're reading this), I'll be expecting a call. :D

While visiting about the boat, I recalled some of the places we've cruised and great experiences we've had thanks to this boat. You know the "Year in Review" pieces that show up on the news programs this time of year? Yeah, I had one of those playing in my head.

On another subject, thanks for the well-wishes with our new furry family member. Izzy is fitting in nicely. She spreads the love around and certainly has plenty of energy. Steph and Dan approve... Steph would like to take her home with them. That's not gonna happen.

New Year's Eve is coming. Traditionally, we spend the night out on the boat to watch the fireworks. Might be a good time for Izzy's first "overnight."

Best wishes,
Jim

And my Mom's name was Isabel, Izzy for short.

She loved Mexican food and boats too..... Been gone now since 1995, she said she wanted to come back as a cat.....

Can I visit Mom sometime?

Charlie, I love your sense of humor....you are always coming up with comments that brighten my day....but this one is probably the best! Thanks......looking forward to seeing you at the CBC/SBS!

Charlie, you can come visit Izzy anytime. If your Mom was a bit of an imp, we may be onto something. Izzy is getting comfortable with knowing her place in the family is secure. It is fun watching her discover her "super powers"... she is learning to jump and seems pretty impressed with her turn of speed. Keep in mind that she has known no other home but a cage at the Animal Shelter, she didn't have the space to learn these skills. Her "arrested development" has not affected her smarts or her capacity to show affection... she has all of us wrapped around her little... um paw. Joan taught her the pleasure of belly rubs and she now comes looking for them (did your Mother do this?).

We have been having great fun with our daugher and son-in-law here, including the best frickie-dickie dolphin show of the year just this afternoon. I'll post in the next day or two, after the kids have gone home.

Best wishes,
Jim

Thanks Jim, I'd love to visit sometime. Still working here though, be hard to do until I really retire! As far as I know, Mom did like belly rubs, I'd have to ask my Dad for sure  and he died about a year after she did. :sad

We got our two cat critters from a shelter in Maine. Scooter, the grey tiger hadn't been out of a cage either, he loves to run around the big house we have now. Snowball, the white lady had been abused by her previous owner who threw her against a wall and broke her jaw. I just don't understand folks that mistreat animals...All healed now but she has a snaggletooth which sticks out at an angle. Doesn't bother her so we won't put her through a fix....It was a long time before she trusted anyone, now she'll jump into our laps for a scritching... :cat :cat

Have fun with the FD dolphins, wish we had some in our bay/river but they'd freeze their little fd fannies off!

Happy New Year!

Charlie

We took the kids to the airport this morning at Oh-dark-thirty. We had a great visit and it was tough to say good-bye. Lots of fun while they were here...

Monkeying around at the zoo...

ZooE.jpg

We were able to "guilt" Steph into a dolphin cruise yesterday. Didn't have to go far... less than 3 miles from the house, the dolpins were especially active.

Dolphins1e.jpg

Dolphins2e.jpg

At one point, Steph said, "What's that pink I see on them?" Well, that would explain why they were so active... dolphins get a bit "flushed" (you can see pink on their bellies) when they are ummm, in an amorous mood. Joan got a great shot of one dolphin couple well out of the water, but it would be dolphin porn if I posted it here. When we enlarged the image at home... well, let's just say that they were uninhibited... Dolphins Gone Wild.

Steph used to work with us in the studio. I asked her to shoot something with Joan and me on the boat; she still has her skills... did a fine job in directing us and composing the image.

Yes, we put Izzy into that shot. Miss Iz certainly got her share of attention while the kids were here.

Indeed, very happy holidays. Hope yours were merry and bright.

Best wishes,

Happy New Year, C-Brat friends!

Wild Blue is at anchor in the Laguna Madre; spending the night with the hopes of seeing some fireworks. It is also the first overnight on the boat for Izzy (hopefully to be followed with the moniker "the boat cat"). She sat by Joan while underway, has had supper, took a "bath", and is asleep in the v-berth. :D :cat

A few minutes after we anchored, we were visited by a TPW (Texas Parks and Wildlife) officer on a boat... "Are you aground?" We are in about 3 feet of water and assured him that we were fine. "Well, as long as I'm here I'd like to do a safety check."

Joan quickly showed him the proper paperwork and safety equipment. Winds are 13 gusting to 20, the boat is riding comfortably, and there's a 30-40% chance of rain this evening, with fog after midnight. We are the one and only boat out here now that it's dark. Pilot house boats like ours are rare in these parts; the TPW officer seemed surprised that anyone would be out here to watch fireworks.

As a reminder to those of you who boat year 'round: you do have your 2009 sticker and registration onboard, don't you?

Happy New Year!
Jim & Joan (and Izzy)

Happy New Year ol'buddy...let me share our Naples New Year Fireworks just in case that fog comes in too early and spoils yours.

Here's how it went...

As per our usual New Year tradition, we took the boat out for the night, anchoring in the Laguna Madre to watch the fireworks at midnight. This is Izzy’s first overnight on the boat.

Vertical clouds building as we headed out...

JoanIzE.jpg

izzy rode next to Joan while we made our way to where we planned to anchor. The wind had come up, and the Laguna is not particularly protected. We dropped the anchor, put out extra chain, and settled in. Izzy had no problem, but was a bit of a pill... poking her nose into every nook and cranny on the boat. At one point, she was about to disappear in a small opening behind the refrigerator, but Joan caught her just in the nick.

By 10:00, the wind had let up, and the boat settled into an easy motion at anchor. Izzy had eaten twice. We watched a movie. Izzy wandered around even more... lots of places to explore on this boat. Joan was very concerned that she’d chew some of our wiring (kinda important since it runs to all our nav gear and electronics!!); we kept a close watch on her.

We watched TV and played Yahtzee and cards to stay awake until midnight so we could enjoy the fireworks. At times, clouds rolled in then out, but we never got the forecast thunderstorms or rain. Right on schedule, at the stroke of midnight, the firewords started. We had positioned ourselves at anchor so the viewing would be good, and we weren’t disappointed.

FireworksComp1E.jpg

FireworksComp2E.jpg

The display went on for about 20 minutes. And when it was over, unlike the folks onshore who had to drive home, we were able to go right to bed! Yeah, we know how to party. Mother Nature did provide some additional fireworks, but it never rained and the wind didn't come back up.

Izzy slept on Joan’s side of the v-berth, and we all had a relatively quiet night. I got up once about 4:30 to check the anchor (good holding) and used the upstairs bathroom. With that movement, Izzy got up and started nosing around; she is certainly a curious little rascal.

NewYearSunriseE.jpg

We were up to see the sunrise over South Padre Island. The visibility was good, the temp was in the upper 60s, and light winds... a great way to start the new year. Joan made French toast and sausage for breakfast... chow always tastes better on the water. By the time we were done eating, the predicted fog rolled in.

Fog1E.jpg

It was thin enough overhead that we knew it would burn off in a couple hours. Decision time: pull up the anchor now or sit here and wait for better visibility. Well, I was due for some radar practice, so we fired up the motor and raised the anchor. To quote our friend, Roger (Dreamer)... "Might as well find out if all this expensive nav gear works."

Izzy had been doing well... until the windlass started pulling in the anchor chain. Just before she could disappear behind the fridge, I got ahold of her and put her in her carrier. Joan was out on the bow, wondering why I wasn’t running the windlass.

Fog2E_copy.jpg

We motored south and the fog thickened... about 100 yards visibility. Under the causeway and south to the ship channel; as we turned west in the channel, the fog began to lift. By the time we got to the Port Isabel Turning Basin, the visibility was good and the sun was in full bloom.

CanalE.jpg

We turned into our canal and made our way home... "clear and a million" when we pulled up to our dock. Yep, a very nice way to ring in the New Year.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Happy New Year Jim,

Thanks for sharing a beautiful way to start the new year. Glad Izzy is working out. (Our cat that looked like a twin was called Buzzy, 'cause she was alway busy and at times would get this hyper phase which meant she could run all the way around the room on the walls without touching the floor.)

Curious, are the fireworks shots with the new P&S? Great shots, but loved the sunrise over S. Padre.

Hi Harvey,

The fireworks were shot with my older small Canon, an S3. It is larger, so easier to handhold for those slow shutter speeds. Can't put that one in a pocket, though. The right tool for the job. Both cameras are similar in operation. One thing I did find: it does a better job of shooting fireworks on the "sports" setting instead of the "fireworks" setting; faster shutter speed, and seems to compensate for the extreme contrast.

Best wishes,
Jim

January 4th. Another beautiful day in the Tropical Tip. After breakfast and a soak in the hot tub, we went out for a boat ride. The plan was to make a gentle circumnavigation of our island... once around, slow and easy to get Izzy comfortable with the boat.
We took her out to the boat in her carrier, and then opened the door so she can come out when she feels comfortable. She’s curious, so it doesn’t take her long to venture out.
We came out our canal, turned into the ICW, and out to the Laguna through the swingbridge. The day was perfect: upper 70s, hazy sun, and very little wind. We ran out to the end of the jetties... the water is generally a bit rougher there, but it was pretty gentle today. Still, we turned around early so there wouldn’t be the motion to make Izzy sick (no sign that it was going to happen).

Looking back towards South Padre Island, a light ground fog enveloped the bottom of the buildings, with the tops in sunshine. We made our way down the Brazos-Santiago Ship Channel.

ShipChannelE.jpg

The plan changed when we go close to the turn off for the Port Isabel Channel... fins! Izzy was doing fine, we decided to spend some time dolphin watching. They started off to the side of us. Joan took the helm while I stepped out into the cockpit to shoot some photos.

What a show! Within minutes we had dolphins all around us! As usual, they teased me: popping up here and then disappearing when I pointed the camera... then popping up over there and laughing at me. No matter, they were close to the boat... close enough to feel the dolphin spit! I fired off about 50 shots with our little point and shoot camera.

While watching the dolphins, we saw a friend of ours coming up the channel. We gave a call to Skip and told him about the show we were getting. He came up alongside us with his AdventureCraft. We haven’t seen Skip in a while - he is now retired and the AdventureCraft is his “cabin on the water.” Sound familiar?

SkipAdventureCraftE.jpg

When we got back to our dock, our neighbor was cleaning the fish he caught today. Check out the audience...

FishCleaningE.jpg

Yes, lots of F-D dolphin shots today. These critters are just so amazing... they are watching us as much as we watch them. We don't track 'em down, they come to us. It never gets old for us, but just in case y'all are tired of these, I'll take some "time off" with these shots after today. But wait 'till you see all the really cute cat photos I have. :photo :cat

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim,

If you take time off from the FD dolphin shots then what will we use to abuse you? Ya' gotta give us northerners something to whine about.

From the pen of son-in-law Dan, here is this week's strip...

I joke about Dan being able to use this strip to make this guy look like a dufus. Art imitating life? Yeah, this one happened...

Please note: this post is 100% dolphin-free

The last few days on the boat have been spectacular. Our hearts go out to those in parts of the country that are experiencing the wrath of Mother Nature. Goodness knows, we've had our share. These days in South Texas are quite serene...

From Tuesday, the smooth waters heading out...

ShrimperOutE.jpg

After sunset, the ducks were flying... east?

ComingInE.jpg

Last night... up ahead... is that... pirates?

Sunset1E.jpg

Arrrrhhhggg! And the scallywags in the sunset...

And the day's last rays...

Hope you find it soothing.
