Joan made arrangements for us to take the shuttle to a nearby casino. She downloaded rewards info for a couple free meals... I think this officially makes us old fart tourists... now which way to the penny slot machines?

Best wishes,
Jim

You still look like young farts to me. However, when you start complaining about your "lumbago" and the young whippersnappers with their go fast boats, I will happily promote you to old fart. Joan will have to start wearing a babushka and have her hair colored blue to get the same promotion.

This old fart remembers that: Guy Lumbago, used to play music for New Years Eve's Celebrations !

I think you mean Guy Lombardo - the memory loss must be starting...

I remember Guy Lumbago, Flomax clears that up in no time! Old Farts Rule!
Think I messed up someplace, I've been taking flexoril for the Lumbardo, and putting Flowmax into the gas tanks trying to get up to 35kph and down to 2gph. Might have some :bat in the belfry. Just refusing to be an old fart hummmm, denial or alltimers, you be the judge. :thup :?: :thdown :?

OK, I don't feel so "old fartish". I remember old friends of ours laughing about "Guy Lumbago"... over and over... each New Year. I guess they forgot how funny that was the year before?

It was a good night at the casino. Not good, as in: we won a pile of money. No, but the whole evening cost me less than $20. That's tips for the shuttle rides, 2 nice meals, and an evening of gaming. Plus, we dressed like grown ups for the first time since we were in NYC.

When we got back to the marina, quite a few more boats had arrived. I didn't complain about any of the "whippersnapper, go-fast boaters".. seems that many of them have a few years on us. The docks will certainly be full here, but this should be a good place to lay over for a few days while the locals fill up the lakes and waterways.

We'll get the bikes down and explore. Lots of people walking dogs, so Izzy may have to go to the grassy area in her carrier and come out when we find a quiet place. The weather is supposed to be nice for the next week. It's all good.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

I've been having trouble with the wifi here... signed on with Joan's netbook right now, so no photos to post. Orilliia is a great town with a nice city marina. We found the best farmers market yet yesterday... besides the usual fruits and veggies, there were crafts, crepes, meats, musicians, authors, really good tie-dye... this was more like the Ganges Market.

We were visited by a sailing internet friend and his family yesterday (a forum much like this one) that I've corresponded with for years. Nice to put a face and voice with the name. We had lunch out on the patio of a nearby restaurant. Nice time.

The marina thinned out for while yesterday afternoon while all the boats were out playing... then filled right up again when a few sprinkles came by late afternoon. As expected, it was packed last night, but not rowdy... surprising, considering the beautiful full moon. We sat in the cockpit and watched the parade of people and boats go by, Radio Margaritaville playing in the background.

We'll shove off again in a couple days when the crowds go back to work. I'll post some photos when I get a decent connection.

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim, with no mountain landmarks to keep oriented on, how do you know which way to go? :wink

They have this bright thing in the sky called: the sun. You can use it for orientation. When in question about which way to go, we also use the same thing Columbus used when he discovered the New World: GPS/chartplotter. Unlike the Erie, good charts are a must here.

When we first went out on a C-Dory with Tom and Susan, I looked out at the area, and it all looked the same to me. Pretty, with all those mountains, islands, trees, and water...but it looked the same in every direction. I was sure glad Tom knew where he was going.

Navigating is much easier in the Tropical Tip... when in the Gulf, if you get lost, go west... you'll eventually find land. As you approach South Padre Island, look for the high rise condos on the horizon (the only things taller than the palm trees). When in the bay, watch the birds... don't go where short-legged birds are standing in the water.

The mountains are certainly pretty... but when the viz goes down to 100 feet and the ceiling is 10 feet, you have to be ON the mountain to see it. 8)

Best wishes,
Jim

Glad to be of help, eh? (I'm learning the local lingo)

Anyone here remember the Captain Jim comic strip? Just thought I'd give y'all an update on what Dan (the artist behind Captain Jim) has been doing. Here's an e-mail we got from him today...

----------

Hi Jim and Joan,

I just wanted to let you know that I am officially a published book author. Over the last few years people have been telling me that I should do a book of my comic strips from school. I thought that it was a nice idea, but that I wouldn't be able to come up with the initial capital to do it or have the time to find a publisher. Well, I happened upon a website called lulu.com. Yes, it does sound like one of the characters from "Hee Haw." The site is geared towards people that want to self-publish books, cds, calendars, or almost anything that you would find in a book store. This weekend, I decided to put in the time, and I created my first book which is now being sold on the website. If you want to check it out, type in the keywords of Desktop Bandits at lulu.com. Depending on how well it does, I may try to publish a Captain Jim book as well (I have not given up on it). The main reason I wanted to email isn't to self promote my book, but to thank you both for being so supportive over the years. I feel very fortunate to have you both believing in my abilities. I don't think other people would have as much support in their son-in-law spending his free time drawing pictures. I hope that your trip continues to be a wonderful adventure, and we look forward to hearing about it. Talk to you soon, and thank you so much again.

Dan

---------------

His "Desktop Bandits" comic is something he's been doing for several years and is a regular feature on the website and newsletter for the school district where Steph and Dan teach. I still think there is an audience of early retired folks for the Captain Jim comics... we'll see how this works out.

Not intended to be a promotion of any kind, just letting you know what Dan has been up to

Best wishes,
Jim

PS - If anyone has a problem with this update, say the word and I'll pull this post (or have one of the BIG GUYS do it after the 30 minutes).

Jim & Joan,
Coming from a fellow that has had more then his share of father in laws and mother in laws, let me put this gently as possible.

"He is a keeper"

I remember nothing but grief from my in-laws and never a supporting word. For you to have provided nothing but positive reinforcement for Dan's endeavors over the years shows the true nature of your character. For him to not only recognize it, shows your support was appreciated and his note to you proves you put your money on a winner.

Best wishes and Happy Cruising

Thank you for sharing the news about Dan. It is obvious that your daughter has good tastes in men. Next, I'm certain that you are going to say something like....."yeah, she takes after Joan"....

The two of you are very special folks and it obviously is continuing on to your next generation! Congratulations to all of you!

Ya, Izzy needs to talk to Snack - she fell off the dock the other day so now they've both been baptized !

You really need to shave the mustache off of that boat - or have you been cruisin' in tea ?

Sorry to hear about Snack's dip. Izzy said, "I feel her pain... and the cold and wet."

We attended the party at the marina last night... good time. It was their 18th Annual Roast and Toast, and they had a sold out crowd. The Elvis impersonator was pretty good (can't believe I wrote those words  ), and there was a very good young rock band that traded sets with him. I can tell I'm getting old, though: my ears are still ringing this morning.

Pizza and face-painting for the kids; champagne, wine, and a nice roast beef meal for the grown-ups. A very nice bunch of people at Reach Harbour Marina.

Can you find Elvis in the crowd?

ElvisCrowdE.jpg

His Elvis voice was decent on the singing... but the illusion went away when we spoke between songs... with an English accent.

Best wishes,
Jim
