The Future of This Site

I've just finished sending a number of PM's, after locking the second thread in as many weeks. Here's the deal.

I've had enough of the negative, political, and obviously confrontational topics of late. However, this site belongs to the C-Brat community, not me. I'm not going to start telling folks what they can and can not discuss.

That being said...I'm under no obligation to be a member here, nor contribute any of my free time to maintaining a community where the topics of late are a primary draw. I come here for enjoyment and relaxation - not political debate, arguments, insults and negative commentary. If these types of discussions are to be the norm around here now, just say the word - I'll be glad to turn over the C-Brat reigns to somebody else not so opposed to this new direction.

Me - I'd prefer to stay on as your not-so-humble nerd, and have the site shift its focus back to what made this place so great originally. Fun and friendly conversation, with us sharing the POSITIVE aspects of our lives and feelings with each other, along with great tech talk about the boats we all admire.

It's up to you, folks.

Bill-

Your points are well taken!

The fun and joy of this site has always been with the focus on boating and the concurrent great friendship enjoyed by courteous members sharing ideas together.

These politically controversial discussions that we get into seem to inevitably lead into divissive position taking and personal bickering.

Sometimes a thread just meanders that way, but sometimes it turns out the original question was a baited trap to bring out political opposites.

This is not fun or funny.........

Let's get back to the business of boating!

With you all the way, Bill. Mostly a lurker here, but I concur 100% about diminishing the abusive "political" posts. Discussion of politics seems to go that way, these days. Does not have to.

I strongly suspect almost all of us breathe a huge sigh of relief when you lock down one of those errant threads. Please accept my gratitude and appreciation for the job you do. Been there, done that sort of thing, and it takes something out of you to be the enforcer, for sure ... my prescription is a small dose of an adult beverage, administered at those crucial moments!

It seems to me members should make these wandering political posts as PM's

Naw, there are at least 50 forums on other sites that can fill the need to discuss politics. Personally, I'd rather discuss dogs. At least dogs are WYSIWYG. To a large extent, so are most Brats AND C-Dorys, and those are the folks and boats I truly enjoy reading about.

It boils down to the decisions made by the individual poster. As the Sys Admin, you could get rid of posters crossing the line as you define it.

I'm passionate about politics, but resisted posting in those threads because I too come to this site to talk about something we all have in common, C-Dory boats.

It is guaranteed when talking religion or politics someone is going to disagree with you 100% on some issues. This of course easily leads to the rest of it which can take away the great value of this site.

Bill,

We are very appreciative of this place and what you have created. Your foresight to make the ONE rule here has allowed it to evolve into a very special forum.

This place is about the boating. :thup

Don't let the trolls get you down; you have the agreement and support of the Brats. The only vote I'll discuss here is our vote of support for you!

Best wishes,
Jim

I'm with you Bill. I don't even continue reading posts that are political, religion oriented, or abusive in any way. It isn't that I am not interested in politics and religion, it is just, that is not why I am a member of this site.
Unfortunetly, there are always people who look at interrupting thing as a challenge. I don't know what the option is. Personally I think anyone that fits into this category should just be put on the rejected list. But then you still have to be the police. I guess the question you pose is the result of you and the other admins doing such a great job thereby the growth and interest in this site.

good job Bill, I would surmise that those e-mails weren't an overly fun or enjoyable task.......hats off to ya for your efforts to keep the pub running smooth all these years

Bill,
Agreed. This is not the place for the other stuff. There are plenty of outlets for free speeches.
Keep up the good work.

Merv

Concur 100%. Let's stick to boating and C-Dorys and C-Rangers.

I, for one, don't mind you zapping a thread or for the moderator to do it when they see it happening. You can just post a warning that things are getting out of hand and then if it doesn't quit...

I could not agree more regarding political posts. They have often seemed to become a mechanism where clever rhetoric becomes a vehicle for personal attack.

There is no reason that any topic related to boating cannot be discussed in a civil constructive manner. I know individuals who are afraid to post on C-Brats on boating related topics. Why, because on some occasions responses to posts have been so sharp (coming to mind is where a response stated something like ... new members shouldn't post).

I do believe there is a need to keep one another abreast about quality control and design problems. Additionally, at a time when C-Dory is expanding it's dealer network very substantially, I think it's beneficial for us to share our experiences. For example, how is warranty work being handled in those cases where a dealer doesn't have repair facilities?

In my mind, the type topics I've cited in the preceding paragraph are not "negative" and are appropriate for the C-Brats forum when done in an informational manner or when looking for advice as to how to proceed.

From my perspective, Da Nag is 100% on target. I look forward to being able to post without reading and re-reading what I've drafted, trying to be careful I'm not saying something that becomes an avenue for personal criticism. I've taken to using PMs a great deal. Had I used a post, others might have benefited substantially from the information interchange. I'd like nothing better than to see us all follow Bill's recommendation.

Absolutely! I'm with Bill. I notice several others who agree that this site has gone in the wrong direction are telling Bill to just zap the thoughtless posters. I think we have to do more than that. The point is that he or Mike shouldn't have to zap posts! I think his main gripe is not just that the site has become negative/off-topic/political, or too full of oh so cute innnuendo, but that he is tired of being the trashman or the cop on the beat. Remember, this site has to be fun for him and Mike too.

So come on folks, lets remember the basic rule before posting and if somebody else forgets it lets resist the temptation to keep an inappropriate thread alive by chiming in.

Trolling for controversy is never fun for anyone but the troll.

So true - that's why some try to put their "twist" into any thread possible. Ignore 'em... sometimes you have to bite your tongue (fingertips?), but eventually they'll move on to another audience.

Did I mention lately how cool these boats are?

A huge thanks to Bill. I have been associated with this community from the beginning. Robbin and I have had some of our best times and have developed some wonderful friendships thur our involvement with the CBrats.
For the last year or so I have posted very little on the site. I have done most of my communication thru PM's. The tone of some of the posts have been so negative that it has just turned me off.
I for one want this site to continue. I can understand Bills frustration. He does this for us and people should not forget that. I hope Bill and Mike will continue to do the great job that they have always done. It is always a few who can wreck a good thing. I just hope this can be avoided.
