10/05/12 FYI....

This is the Irish Times transcript of an actual marine radio conversation between the British and the Irish off the coast of Co. Kerry (Ireland). Marine Radio conversation recorded and reported by the Irish Coast Guard in Dublin, IRE:

Irish: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision;
British: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision;
Irish: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision
British: This is the captain of a British navy ship, I say again divert YOUR course;
Irish: Negative. I say again, you will have to divert YOUR course;
British: This is the aircraft carrier HMS Britannia! The second largest ship in the British Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand you change your course 15 degrees north, I say again, that is 15 degrees north or countermeasures will be taken to ensure the safety of this ship;
Irish: We are a lighthouse. Your call.

reminds me of the time a sail boater kept getting barring down on us. Justed keeped getting closer. Dad waved him off. Sail boater yells " I have the right of way under sail" we answer " we are anchored " he turned .

While this may be a humorous story at the expense of the British, after performing a thorough internet search, it does not appear that the British navy has an aircraft carrier named HMS Britannia. Like so many unvetted sources on the internet, this article may well fall under the realm of fiction.

Don't worry about not finding the carrier. When I first heard this it was US carrier and a Newfoundland lighthouse. Later it was a Mexican frigate and a Panamanian lighthouse and most recently a German frigate and a Danish lighthouse. It's like real estate......location, location, location. :wink:

OK really? I don't know what I find more funny, the obvious joke its self? or the fact that anyone had to go research it to see if its true? to the point that there is a wiki page on it?? really world get a since of humor and learn to recognize obvious in your face sarcasm.

:smilep Any thing that can put a smile on a face or make a person chuckle for a brief moment. True or false is always a good thing donkey, says Shrek

The point is that it was presented as factual content -- not as a joke. And mistruths are not always a good thing, particularly when they can be perceived as hurtful. Just the other day, a relative sent me an email that apparently went viral in which it said that President Obama signed over 940 executive orders. The story was patently false, but that did not stop thousand's of people from believing it. So just as we all have a responsibility for being truthful in print, we also have a responsibility for pointing out things that are false.
