Aint America Great !!! :D

OK, I named my cat Duke....so ya know I loved the post from one of our new C-Dory TC255 owners.... Sequim Bay has a marina named after the Duke.

Darlin.... I am about to use one of those Southwest Airline tickets....and do you think our cat would like to make a trip for a great photo opportunity?? :cat

Had a picture of my Tom Cat duke in the FreeByrd album at one time... I'll take a look see and find out if it is still there. I have showed the picture to Jeff at the factory and offered it for the logo when the new TC255 came out....but he thought better of it. My man Duke up to his old tricks..

Pat – My wife (Terri) is from Sequim and her family still lives there. We were up there for her fathers 80th birthday last month. The get together was at the John Wayne Marina and was my first time there. Very nice marina with photos, sculptures, guns and info on the Duke. One of Americas last great actors. When he died, the better part of hollywood also died.

Pat,

The John Wayne Marina is built on 22 acres of land that was donated by John Wayne. He visited the area often aboard his boat Wild Goose. We have been cruising to the Sequim area almost every year since 1998. Plan to make a visit this year in June or July, as part of a 2 month cruise in the Sound and Vancouver Is. area.

"I mean to kill you in one minute, Ned...or see you hanged in Fort Smith at Judge Parker's convenience...which will it be?"

"I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!"

"FILL YOUR HAND, YOU SON OF A &^$@#!"

He did have some great lines, eh?

Ah Rigby 416, the culmination scene from the only movie for which the Duke won an academy award. Many people claimed that John Wayne just played himself and therefore did not deserve the awards. My thought is if he just played himself, he was a great american and was entertaining to watch, which is what films are all about. Also what a great gesture in donating an area that all can use for years after his passing.

:beer Here's to you Duke. :thup

Old Growth Dave,

Your wife from Sequim? Wow. Her did is a bit younger, but I may know the family. I'm a Sequim High grad!! Family in the area since 1892.

OK, Sam...this one is for you...

The Duke and Kirk Douglas shoot a couple of bad guys who try to kill them...

Kirk Douglas: "Mine hit the ground first"

Duke: "Mine was taller..."

This is great... and to know that our very own C-Dory loving John Wayne... well..... OK... his real name is Lester.... is from that area.

Dusty man... send me an email. I can't get one to go thru to you.

Okay Byrdguy - email on the way.

And another name dropper!! John Wayne and his beat up old scow were often tied up alongside the old Lamplighter. Cool guy. Would have been a perfect Brat.

Get your halibut up here - hate to throw out all these shrimp. You sure missed a good Bratathon at Lopez.

Apparently when achoored in Sequim Bay, the Duke would send his deck hands out in their tender and have them invite other boaters anchored nearby over for cocktails and often dinner aboard the Wild Goose. A wild Goose in flight is featured on the welcome sign at the marina entrance. His spirit of hospitality remains strong here. The marina residents and the Sequim Bay yacht Club try to be as welcoming as our benefactor.

Roger,

When I clicked on the link you posted I get this:

There is no website configured at this address.

Can you check the url?

Dee and I will have to come visit some time as it sounds like a coll place.

Don

Rigby and Chuck Pacific, you have picked lines from the War Wagon and Big Jake. Those are a couple of my favorite John Wayne movies.

Dreamer thanks for the story about the Duke and his boat. It is cool to find out that the Duke did stuff with the regular people when visited the area. I will have to check out that marina next time that we are up that way.

Don - the link you clicked on is the link for Sequim Bay Yacht Club. A Google search shows it as their new address and the link on their previous site shows it as their new address. My guess is their webmaster has not finished their new page at this time.

Did a whois search and the domain has been registered since 10 May 05 to a Roger Clark and expires tomorrow so don't know what is going on.

Knotty C, Thanks for the heads up on the web site. I will investigate seeing I am the Webmaster of that site! The url was correct. Thanks

I can confirm the "Duke's" fratnizeration with us "common folk". I had met John a number of times at Catalina's Isthmus. He always remembered our Labrador Retrievers when we walked them ashore.
One day we were sailing into San Diego Bay as Wild Goose was going out. I told my sister in law about John Wayne and his boat. About that time John came out of the pilot house and yelled "Hi Bob"--my sister in law almost fell overboard!

He was guite a man!

We kept our Cal 46 in the John Wayne Marina for 3 winters and love that place! Looks like we will visit it again, since our new TomCat 255 will be close to finishing in 3 to 4 weeks!--but not be launched until it gets to Florida.

Bob... You are getting a TC255...and not going to sea trial it while it is near the factory? :?:  But then...you may be having it shipped without power and rigged in FL. ?? Keep me posted on the ship date. Wefing's will be doing some major retro work on C-Byrd to include a bottom paint job that will be farmed out to a local that is set up for basically bottom paint jobs only...and I may have to leave her down there for a spell... We might need to throw us together a FL gathering.
