Hello all.

I have been exploring the various boats out there and think a 22' C-Dory might be the proper fit. I would appreciate your opinion.

I grew up on the coast of North Carolina where our family always had a boat. I hope to return there upon retirement in about five years. In the meantime, I live in a Chicago suburb. I have had a sailboat and cuddy cabin runabout on Lake Michigan but am now "between boats".

I like the idea of a C-Dory in that I could visit ports on Lake Michigan and travel the Illinois River now and then when I retire, cruise the Inland Waterway and the Cape Fear River in North Carolina.

I'm thinking that a 22 footer with twin 40hp outboards might be a good trailerable solution. What do you think? Also are there any owners in the Chicago area? Thank you for your input.
 
xtarheel: Well...the CD22 is a great boat.... poke about the many photo albums here...paying particular attention to Halcyon, Wanderer and a few more who have spent many miles, water miles on the water in a CD22...and they are just a pair also who have traveld from the east side a bit.

Who knows...you may even find a great deal on a used older modle too. A lot of folks moving up to the CD25, TC255, and C-Ranger Tugs .... so the opportunity is pretty good on finding one.

My brother Mike and his wife B spent over 400 motor hours on theirs this year...and he works 50-60 hours a week...so...they do not wait for good weather...they just GO!!
 
I think you are fortunate to have located the 22' C-Dory as a prospective boat in your future. Welcome to the C-Brats! Explore the many "threads" on this site, become a part of the C-Brat family and you soon will be smitten (read possessed) with C-Doryitis. :lol:

hi fellow boater,
i'm not prepared to state this is a great boat, although, i've not really found that great boat, as of yet. i will state that the 22' twin engine, is easy to handle, takes a waive well, has a shallow draft, and very fuel efficient, and dual engines are the only way i would have it, at least for the area in which i boat.
that's beginning to sound like the perfect boat, but wait, sleeping accommodations are tight, but workable. maintenance, has been by far, surprisingly easy. installations for various items present little or no problems. referring to the interior, one would not normally use words like, fit and finish.
having said the above, this will in all actuality be the keeper boat for me.
good luck in your boat hunting, and know that with your purchase, comes a great deal of supportive network.

We also think that the CD 22 is an excellent boat. The only issues which promoted us to up sizing--was the difficulty getting in and out of the bunk with our large frames and aged backs, and the pounding at speed. You can definately slow down, and the C Dory will handle seas very well. Better than a Deep V--but it will not be as fast in rough weather. You have to accept no shower (sun shower or jump in the lake works well in warm weather)--and not as much privacy as some would like with the protipotty. For most people these are not major issues, and are worth the trade off of a boat which is easy to handle and can be trailered behind almost any SUV or truck.
 
They are pretty fun to work on, too. You have to figure out a few leaning spots, and
then you can work behind the helm and under the galley pretty well. Many, many
ideas for customization are on this site. Everything from extra grab rails to turning
the dinette into a sofa/full size bed. Heaters, air conditioners, etc.

There are some flaws, but they can either be ignored, or fixed simply, or you
can have a grand old time doing all sorts of zany things.

Heck, people have even added 2 feet off the stern. And recently a 16' was cut in
half and is being extended 2'.
