Patty here. I just gasped at the quote Pat got for tires for the Titan. So he put me in charge. Could I just get a quick feedback on what you would expect to pay for tires for a 2004 (I think) half-ton (I think) Titan? I know there are various qualities---I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. Thanks.
 
Patty-Look up the size you need on Tire Rack. They are a big outfit and about as lowcost as you'll find. They even include user recommendations. If you choose to buy from them, they can ship them to a listed tire dealer for installation. I used to buy tires from them and have them installed by one of their local contractors, Goodyear in Redmond. I liked the local dealer so much that now I just go directly to him when I need tires.

If you go to Les Schwab (my FAVORITE tire store), a set of 4 tires 285/60/18 (which is probably what is one your Titan) will go for $941.28 mounted, balanced and out the door (I called the one in Kenmore to ask). This would be for the mid grade, all season truck tires with about 40k-50k warranty. The tires themselves should range from $160-220/ea. for decent, mid-grade tires. That's the installed price. Balancing is about $14/wheel. If you go to the Nissan dealer, they'll probably hit you closer to $1200. You can get a cheaper tire with say a 25/30k mile warranty, but I wouldn't do it.
 
Jeez Roger give Pat a break. Those tires are not cool at all. And come to think of it, when you buy new tires it's a great time to dress up that truck with some custom wheels. I put a great set of Michlins on my truck at Cosco for $550 (after $75 rebate) and that included mounting and balance..

I also once bought tires from Tire Rack... and was real pleased with them... and quick delivery

tires, that's one expense that I just can't get excited about, buying new tires...arrrg. One way you can save a buck is to break out the spare. If you plan on buying the same make, model & size of tires, you probably have one new tire already as a spare. Have them throw the spare on and mount up one of your take off tires as a spare.....don't tell Pat & spend the savings on something fun :)
 
Well, being curious, I checked Tire Rack for your truck's original equipment tire, Goodyear Wrangler SR-A, 50,000 mile guarantee. For 265/70/18 Tire Racks price is $147 per tire and Goodyear Redmond will install (mount and balance) for $16 per tire for a total around $650.
 
Don't know if they have 'em in Washington, but last year we put tires on the truck and boat trailer. After shopping around, Discount Tire had the best price (even beating Sam's Club). We upped the rating on the boat trailer tires, but the truck tires (E-rated) were around $150 +/- for Goodyear Silent Armor - great tires; good grip, quiet running, and (so far) not showing any wear.

My son just shopped for tires for his Expedition and he found that the best buy was a Costco.

One thing to remember that most tires (even more so in S. Calif.) have degradation due to smog and UV light. Most folks think that regardless the tires need to be replaced every 6 to 7 years. Last year I did that on my RV (at about 375 a tire x 6)--and on the way home, I picked up a 3/8" lag bolt!--

I don't like to take chances on tires--a blowout when towing can really ruin your day, truck and C Dory...
 
The Titan Crewcab SE came with two different original options for tires. Ours are the 285/70-17. The BF Goodrich Rugged Trail All Season Highway tires are $50 less each than the Les Schwab tires, mounting will be the same more or less at the Goodrich tire store in Redmond. Thanks, guys! They are STILL way expensive, but little car, little tires, little price - big truck, big tires, big price! The savings will cover a month at Hilton Harbor!
 
I know that I bought some tires a few months back and the mgr at LS told me the price has really jumped due to the cost of petroleum. I had bought the same tire a few yrs ago and the cost was about 40% higher the 2nd time around. Of course gas went "down", but tires....perhaps not.
 
Buy the best tires that you can afford. Saving a few hundred dollars is not worth your life as well as the life of the "other guy".
Michelin has been making tires for a very long time. That is my choice.

I wouldn't buy tires without first checking our C-Brat who owns tire stores in Bend OR -- think his 25 is at EQ right now. Give Les a call -- he has Bob's number, and Les is running on tires he went to Bend to buy/install.

One of the problems I have with the current supply of tires is that most of them are made in China or Korea. I would perfer US made tires. Many of the US brands are actually made overseas, so you have to look carefully at the tire.
 
I too try to buy American. Near as I can find on the net, only
Cooper Tires are American owned, American made and union made.
Goodyear is American owned, union made . Some Goodyear Tires are made in the USA and some are imported, check sidewall. The following are American owned companies, union status unkown. Like Goodyear, some of their tires are made in America and some are imported: Falls, Guardsman, Kelly-Springfield, Mastercraft, Sears Roadhandler and Unocal 76. But, as Bob says, it's best to look at the sidewall to confirm country of manufacture.

I'd go with Michellin's make sure the same load range or higher. The Michellin LTX series are great tires especially in the rain. I just towed Venture 23 1100 miles thru monsoon rains up from Florida to Pa. with out a wiggle. My Michellins are few years old and still look like new. There are cheaper tires.

Patty here. Have NOT purchased yet but have gotten terrific information above. It's not urgent, urgent but we will need them before we tow to Utah in September. Pat was at Les Schwab when he ran the numbers by me and was ready to say "do it." I suggested we get more info so he passed the baton to me. We will take our time now and do it right, and no matter how expensive, it will NOT total the Les Schwab price!! Thanks everyone.
