TomCat: filling that gap below the forward windows

Hi to all.

I have noticed in pictures of other TomCats that there is some sort of flexible molding that covers the gap below the forward windows, at the back of the "dash". I am not sure how describe it. Here is a picture of mine:

Then take a look at this picture of Seven Please:

Is that some sort of molding? Or is that some sort of caulking?

You worrywart! :roll: What are you worried about?? Not sure what I have, I'm on the gulf coast right now. Never had any water through there, If it concerns you, put a bilge pump on tre dashboard... :mrgreen:

HaHa! :)

Not really worried about water; I'll have to keep that forward window closed while underway anyway. I just like the look better with that molding there.

Hi Mike,

You're right, it is both molding and caulking.

I think they did this in a few places, sew a length of vinyl around a tube and then caulk it into a space that is too wide for caulking by itself. (I think there is a name for it in the upholstery trade but I don't know what it is)
I have to say that if I am less than enthusiastic about some of the work done by Fluid Marine who I believe built the boat, the headliner and vinyl in the berth and cabin is very nicely done. Many parts that are unusual shapes that really fit nice and the boat is very quiet under way and when at dock. VERY quiet really. The person did the interior was a genuine craftsman and the interior was partly what sold me on the boat. I very much appreciate craftsmanship in anything really.

If you look at that area from below, in the bunk, you'll see that the gap is a non-issue. You may lose small pieces of paper in there, but that's it! It's just where the instrument panel joins the cabin. If a filler makes you like it better, go for it!
 
Ditto - no opportunity for any sort of water intrusion as that is a single molded piece - the cover you see is purely cosmetic to cover up the wires.

I chose a thinner, circular, black wire cover but I don't have any pictures of it in my album.

Good eye for detail, it looks like they covered it with a vinyled piece of half round. I am looking at various ways to close that gap on all the Cdory's but currently we are just caulking that joint.

Anybody want to chime in with a new idea in regards to that location?

The big difference is the boat with the "moulding" has the vinyl interior as opposed to the bare fiberglass of earlier Tomcat's. SO it is vinyl wrapped around a foam piece (maybe something like they use to wrap pipes?) or hose and then"glued" in place by the caulking. It doesn give a nive finish there. But your boat isn't finished inside with vinyl, so I don't see any reason to try to close that "gap".

Hey - I had no idea that there were TomCats with a vinyl interior. I wonder if I should do that to my boat. It would give it a more finished look.

I saw one at SBS09, didn't like it. I like my more spartan interior. Very little maintenance. As I recall, it also had the molded interior, didn't like that either, I can take out all my interior if I choose to.
