TomCat transducer: Finding the Sweet-spot

Captain Matt, remind me. You did a shoot-thru yes? How is that working out for you?

Charlie? Which way did you go?

Do we know of any other TomCats with shoot-thrus?

Shoot Thru....

I don't know any that have "holed their hulls". I also have one exterior on the outside of the port sponson. I have a "department of redundancy department"....

I'm using an Airmar 600W In Hull (aka shoot thru) for depth only and it has worked great. I can keep bottom lock at all speeds through 250' of water. Honestly it has been a flawless rig.
 
Thanks to you all for motivating me to rethink a bit. It's time well spent to ponder all the options.

The one thing I have to give up with a shoot-thru is temperature, but I suppose I can live without that.

So I am still pondering.

Why do you need temperature? If it's for fishing, the fish aren't where you're taking the temperature :roll: If you just want to know, buy a little cup with a string on it and get a small thermometer. Lots better than a 3" hole in the hull....

:) Certainly not for fishing.

I really only wanted to know the temp before the kids hop into the water. But as you noted, there are other options. Maybe not a cup on a string, though. :)

I am thinking something like this.

There is a temp sensor in the in hull transducer, but I don't know how the temp reading will corrolate with the actual water temp. It is in liquid, in the bilge, with the hull in contact with the water. It would be interesting to compare the in hull TDX temp with actual water temp and see how far off it really is.

Plus the kids can take colder temps than you can and think its fun.

I have the shoot-through transducer (which I love) and I also have a Raymarine paddle wheel on the transom, which includes a temperature sensor. The paddle wheel gets gunked up and needs to be cleaned periodically. As others have pointed out, for a fisherman, finding the thermocline is the important thing.

Instead of a cup on a string, how about a "kid on a rope"? Dunk 'em, if the shriek is too loud :cry , pull them back in with the rope! :thup

I've got the Raymarine transducer on the other hull but lost the temp sensor/paddlewheel when I changed transducers. Don't miss either.

Well heck - that might just be enough to get a feel for the water temp. As you said, it would be interesting to compare the transducer temp to the water temp. I wonder if there would be some fairly consistent offset. Even if it wasn't completely consistent, plus or minus a few degrees would be fine.
