Tower on the Roof of CD22?

Greetings all,

After a long winter here in NE MN it's finally springy enough to start thinkin about the boat.

I would like to build a removable flat platform with railings for the roof of Osprey. This would be used for spotting and catching cobia on the gulf coast and likely casting for muskies etc. For sure my sweetie would utilize it for sunning as well.

I gotta think that this is something other brats have already figured out. Can any of you point me straight to pics or other info on the forum? I'm still a bit green at using the site. Thanks much.

Happy Spring.

Thanks Brent,

Darrel's rack is kind of what I had in mind. I plan to use the existing stainless rails for mounting the thing, I'm chagrin to drill new holes in her roof. I'd like to keep the weight down to a minimum but I do think stainless tubing is called for.

Still hoping for more ideas from the brats, I gotta think that there are others who have built something like this or at least seen it somewhere.

The rack on Hunkydory is the only one I've ever seen on this site. So, you might get many ideas from other brats, they're unlikely to be tested ideas  . As for attaching it just to the existing rails - the existing hand hold are only attached at 3 points/each and neither the backing nor the flange up top covers any significant surface area. I'm not sure I'd trust those 6 attachment points alone to support a rack a chair and a human on top of a big lever arm.

Excellent point Roger,

That is a concern of mine as well. I have 6 stainless washers to put under the rails. I hope that additional surface area will be enough. I should call the factory for their veiw on it. I do weigh 240 dry!

I've seen lots of pics in the brat albums where it sure looks like they've got more weight up there than that, but it's hard to tell where that weight is being transferred to the roof.

Thanks for the advice, that's what I'm lookin for.

All,

I talked with Cam at C-dory last week about mounting a platform using the rails on the roof to support it. While not trying to discourage my project, he pretty much related the party line which is that C-dory does not claim the roof on a 22 cruiser to be a walkable platform. He did allow as how the rails could be considered the strongest structures up there. The center bubble the weakest. He also indicated some surprise at the fact that few brats had attempted such a project and offered help if needed to acquire material for this experimental prototype. I very much enjoyed taking with Cam.

Bottom line is I will be procedeing with the project this summer and will eventually provide pictures of my progress to the forum. Though it will be removable, I have decided to build the railings around it collapsable for passing under trees and bridges. The front railing will also become the new home for our osprey bust figurehead.

All Fur Now!
