Trailer bunkboard carpeting

Have any C-Brats out there had to replace the carpeting on the bunkboards of their trailer? mine's about shot and was wondering about what to use . Out door carpet or something else? Thanks. Alan
 
Hi Hope all is well , We have the same boat cc23 check out our pictures they will be at the end of photo album ( Jennykatz)We have the 3by 8 beam that has rug on it. Also we have the 2by 6 flat boards with a plastic top on it. They come in 30 inch sections . If you need rug you can go to home depot or Lowes and get some indoor out door rug a lot cheaper then WM and I think will hold up better.
 
I agree with Jim. Indoor outdoor carpeting from a major box store works great. Just remember to use stainless steel staples to put it on with or you're gonna get a rude surprise down the road after a few salt water baths.

And staple it on the sides/bottom of the bunks, not on the top!! :shock:

Short aluminum or galvanized roofing nails with the large round head nailed to the bottom and sides helps a lot.
 
Much better than SS staple are Monel --they are much more corrosion resistant, and available in the standard sizes. We have an electric gun for using them for the carpet on the bunks.
 
Wow . Thanks for all the good ideas guys. On our loop trip we left the trailer out in the sun for 6 months & I wonder if the UV is what did it in so quickly. Thanks again. Alan

I would try some of the plastic "slide" things over bare wood and skip the carpet entirely. There's a reason there are several posts already about how staples and roof nails corrode. Also, the carpet holds moisture, making the wood deteriorate faster. Also, the carpet holds salt (in salt water) and makes everything around and below it corrode (eg bunk support posts and brackets).

Just remember that the plastic stuff is very slick. Don't release the trailer straps until on the ramp with water underneath. Just like a roller trailer, a trailer with slick bunks will allow the boat to slide off easily, maybe a little too easily.
 
The plastic slide things sound interesting. Where would I find them & how are they attached to the bunkboards? Alan
 
I have bunks with carpet and have thought about the plastic "slide things" (technical term). What has made me a little cautious is reports that they can scratch the gel coat. Does anyone have any experience to refute or support that point?
 
Our "slicks" are attatched with recessed screws into the bunks. They are made of high density polymer--like Starboard. There does not seem to be much scratching, but we have not put the Tom Cat on the trailer that many times.

As for the salt--we have always washed out boats and trailers down with fresh water after immersion. I have found rot in the wood to be a minimal problem.
 
Hi Allan how goes it The mirror is a U with skrews attached I picked this up at a surplus marine store . I'm going down to the boat today I'll check out the mfg for it

The plastic bunks go over the 2 by 6 's they come 30 in pieces they are attached with S/S staples mine came with my Continental trailer . I think WM might be able to find them If you r still having trouble finding them I'll try to track them down for you

Hi Jim- Linda & I are doing well & getting back into boating mode after doing quite a bit of work on our Farm.We'll probably be driving down to Marco Island in the near future to visit my father. Maybe we can get together and it would be interesting seeing Jennykatz. Alan
 
I have some I got from Champion Trailer last year on my trailer but I don't see them in the 09 catalog. The cabelas look pretty good. Easy to see how they are affixed with SS srews in the recessed area.

These seem to be only rated 2000# for a single set.

I think I'll try the plastic. It sounds like I may need to get longer SS screws because one C dory owner commented to Cabelas that one loosened prematurely with the provided hardware. Thanks for all the comments. Alan
 
Basspro has the fentresses a bit cheaper. They also have these

These appear to be more like what I have on mine (see album) with a much bigger bearing area but its getting up there in price. As i look more at those fentress i'm not sure they're a great choice for a 23 (maybe double stripped?)

I've heard that lowe's carries Monel staples if you go carpet.

found these that are very similar to mine.

Thehulltruth says a a number of people make their own from 3/4" starboard table sawed to fit the bunk, rounded with a router on the edges and counter sunk for the ss screws. You way want them to overlay the edge of the bunk on the inside (unless you use the ones that cover the sides like those above). This because the deeper v of the front of the hull may hit the side of the bunk before the flatter plane contacts the bunks.
