Trailer Maintenance Today

Today was spent building a new set of side guides for the trailer. On at least three trips, I've had the lag bolts that EZ Loader used, come out of the 2x4 and drop the guide down on the fender. Not good for the boat, and not good for the tires of the guy behind me.

Sooooo, new pressure treated 2x4s, new and decent (hopefully) carpeting , and a couple four hours of work. I went with a shorter guide board (8 foot, instead of over 9 foot), and I also through bolted the pivot flange directly to the wood. On the 'boat' side, I counter sunk the bolt heads. The counter sunk bolt heads are covered by carpet. I am saying my prayers that this works well.

A question about the 'pivot' action of the guides. Do most folks snug them up, so the board stays parallel to the side of the boat, or do you let them move a bit? Right now, I have mine snugged up pretty tight.

Regards,

Steve

I keep mine pretty tight. If the were were vibrate down, the boat pressure would put them back parallel to the side of the boat.

I agree with the counter sunk and thru boat approach.

We use Monel metal staples for the carpet.

I have been able to get monel metal at both Home Depot and Lowes. Last bunch was about 6 months ago. Did not look recently, but will check. I use an electric staple gun--and use from 5/16 up to 1/2" depending on thickness of the carpet as I fold it back on the corners.

When I was looking I couldn't find them at either Home Depot or Lowes (or anyplace else I looked), so I guess it depends on your local stores (I did see them online on Home Depot's website). I ended up ordering mine from Amazon, and since then have seen them at an Ace Hardware in a coastal location.
