Trim Tabs for 22' cruiser

Recently purchased but without trim tabs. Is it better to have them as I rely on the outboard to keep bow lower in rough chop. Help on this one would be much appreciated!

Well, here's what I would do--If keeping the bow down is your main concern, start by getting a Permatrim hydrofoil. It's inexpensive (slightly over $100) and easy to install. If you find that doesn't do the trick for you, or if you develop a concern about lateral (side to side) trim, then consider spending the money for trim tabs. Good luck. Enjoy that boat.

I agree, I'd start with the Permatrim's first then add the trim tabs if necessary. We have both and I'm slowly finding that I use both of them some of the time - but I love the Permatrim's on our twin engines. I can trim the boat with my throttle hand, very easy.

I am a newbie, but here are somethings that I considered when pondering the same question (I ended up just getting the Bennett Trim Tabs):

1) The Trim Tabs seem to allow more control at slower speeds. Useful in moderate chop, where the Permatrim would seem to rely on engine speed for effectiveness.

2) Permatrim don't compensate for weight distribution (we do alot of whale watching and people unwittingly rush to the whale side of the boat, trim tabs allow me to adjust port and starboard to provide the best and most stable ride).

Hope this helps and if I am off base BRAZO and others with Permatrim please let me know.

I have both items on my 22' cruiser and I would not leave port without trim tabs, I added them after one trip and I love the trip when I can trim the boat. The trim tabs allow for weights shift side to side and water conditions.
