Trolling

I was trying to look up fishing by trolling on a Cdory and so as usual I googled "trolling" but I just got this and it doesn't have anything to do with fishing or boats. Can someone please help me learn the how to properly fish while underway on a Cdory? Thanks.

Internet trolling
In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion,[3] often for their own amusement.

Pretty simple. I am going to assume that you are using downriggers for your trolling. Once you arrive at your fishing ground throttle down to lowest forward speed. With my Honda 90 this will result in 1.0 to 2.4 kts depending on current speed and direction. Clip your line w flasher and leader etc to downrigger weight and set your downrigger depth and you're trolling. If you get a hookup, throw motor into idle and the fight is on. CDory not any different than any other boat for trolling. It can get more complicated if you start stacking lines on your downriggers but that's another topic.

Not sure where you're fishing but if you go to a local bait shop they can really help you. That's what I do any time I go to a place that I never fished. They will also tell you what bait to use.

As Flint notes, trolling techniques are different in different areas. I have seen successful trolling at 15 knots, and less than a knot. Different types of jigs, down riggers, planes, to get the jig down, use of live bait, use of kites etc...

Ask locals, go out with other C Dory members who are near you. Often folks want another crew member, and will show you the tricks.

We trolled with "meat lines", --basically 1/8 dacron core, and 100 # leader, 50 feet behind out sailboat--with shock cord to let set the hook--caught many different species. Salmon trolling is a art and science. There are those who also follow contours on the bottom.

You tube is my first go-to with everything from dishwaser repair to headlight replacement. Never even thought of it until you mentioned it. I'm going to start fishing again and find I have forgotten how. Thanks to all for all the help.

Nice try- I have been fishing in troys boat with scottys for the last week and it just re-confirms how much I hate them. I horse cart will get you to town but a car is a lot better trip, Cannon is the Car.

Gary,
As mentioned before every bait, lure and gadget has it's individual manufacturers suggested speed, leader length and accessory gadgets that will get you the optimum results. These are the lures and recommendations that I use almost exclusively for large lake rainbow trout and West Coast salmon. http://www.hotspotlures.com/booklet.pdf I've even caught them without the use of the downriggers by just trolling 300+ feet of line with no weight at all. Just a black pearl 4" Apex and it was probably doing it's thing just under the surface.

I don't know if they're available in your area but maybe some of your more popular local brands have similar web sites.

Happy fishin',

Chris

homer, Penns are second favorite downrigger. Wish they still made them. i would suggest penn manual or electrics bought used for anyone looking to save money and get in to the sport.

The Penn manuals are now being made by company called Troll-Master. Look identical to the Penn downriggers.

Not too surprising.
Penn Reels went bankrupt/bought out/reorganized (pick one or all) a while back.
Apparently affected parts, service, production, The Full Monty, etc.
Another sad story about a great American Company :sad .

I'll second the "Apex" line of lures. We are amateurs in comparison with many C Brats, but we almost always caught salmon with the Apex series--both lures and flashers/mini flasher, with cannon down rigger--but often without any down rigger. It was hard getting the sailboat (Cal 46) down to slow enough speed. We often trolled with the RIB dinghy.

Joe, this is a American success story. Still being built here in the us. Based out of Florida. I just hope moving forward they start to build the electric versions.

You know its kind of funny how lures come and go in popularity. Apex were the gold standard for salmon and trout for a long time but I have not seen one on a line in 5 years or so.

My favorite go to lure for salmon right now is the brads cut plug. I have several of both sizes and they work well. It just the best imitation of a cut plug bait I have seen. I do not like how they come rigged out of the box so I retie mine. They are a consist fish killer.
