Tug worker killed in Alaska

Sorry to hear about that accident. It is something which is more common than one might think. I have a friend who is a skipper of tugs out of Valdez, and have heard of this type of accident before.

About 20 years ago we had a fright. Going into Port Alexander, we were going to side tie to a fishing boat with our Cal 46. A very proficient gal was with us (she had a 1000 ton license, and had skippered tuna clippers out of A. Somoa. I told everyone to stay on our boat, and when along side, we would pass lines over. For some reason this gal decided to jump--and slipped when landing on the fishing boat, ending up on the water between the two boats--my engine was still running and the prop in gear. I killed the engine, and her husband and Marie, held the boats apart until we got the gal out of the water. Close call in many ways!

A very sad accident. Difficult circumstances and risky. Current and insecure barges are a deadly combo.

I happened to be in line of view when a local guy slipped between a barge and the adjacent Port of Astoria dock, about a 10 - 15 ft drop. Even though he had on a PFD, he sank a ways before surfacing. Luckily, his brother, working the tug holding the barge off, got a heads up and kept the gap open for retrieval. Once up, he sat on the barge for several minutes and just wailed and moaned. Worst noise you ever heard.

The kid in Alaska did not have much of a chance once he hit the water. A damn shame.
