Twin Engines?

Jay,

Hey that is a cool idea. That way you have the most economical engine for the immediate circumstance, right?

Jay- I think there's room for one more on the starboard side of the main engine, and: What? No dinghy, kayaks, jet skis, or helipad?

For me ,, I would perfer twins over a single when ever possible. The most common engine trouble is fuel, but not all. I feel better having two, especially offshore or other large bodies of water. And to be able to maneuver in those tight spots with two is much easier.

I have twin 50 mercs and I am very happy with them.
I was told when I powered my 22 you save no fuel to under power because you work the motors harder.

I’ve been trying to restrain myself but I just have to jump in the mighty murky twins Vs singles debate. :P

I’ve read quite a few of the posts (not all million and one) on the subject before I purchased and could have gone either way depending on the conditon and price of the boat. That being said I ended up with a pair of Honda twin 50’s.

A benefit of having twins that I had not seen posted is that one has a functional sample of what you might be working on. I am prone to do the basic maintenance and small repairs and it is really nice to have an engine right next to the one I’m working on to readily see which way a line is routed, a clip is mounted, it a part is flipped fore or aft, etc. When something goes bad in the electronics/ computerized systems (once one has exhausted the most probable, simple possibilities) it really nice to have a known good component that one can swap out and determine/ eliminate the cause of the trouble. Buying a part that was not bad in the first place… well it bites. I know you guys don’t know anything about this… :cry If you think your “factory trained authorized” (fill in manufacture) dealership does use this tried and true method of diagnosis with computerized components I have a bridge to sell ya!

A related bonus with twins is when the sea gods are truly against you and, god forbid, both engines quit  you now have an on board donor engine to get at least one up and running. Nice feature when you are truly in the boonies.

OK Ok I’ll admit the real reason I like twins is that they just look, in my opinion, better, saltier, cooler and I have one more throttle to tweak and fool with!

I too often use this system when working on my twin 50 Hondas. I really agree with the last statement. They look COOL. Sorry had to throw that in.
