We've had our first fall storm; csme through last night and will continue into tomorrow. As a result:

SEATTLE (AP) - The Coast Guard has closed the Columbia River, Tillamook Bay, Ore., and the Siuslaw River mouth at Florence, Ore. because of hazardous storm conditions.

The waterways remained closed to all vessels Sunday morning. The Coast Guard says it will re-open these waterways as soon as weather improves.

Requests to transit the river bars before reopening must be approved the captain of the port in Astoria, Ore. Call 503-861-6211 for further information or to request crossing.

Is this a common winter occurrence, or does it take a storm of uncommon strength?

I have no idea. I was wondering that myself.
 
It happens fairly often. Sometimes just a few hours as a precaution but in bigger storms they'll close the bar or bars for the duration. Last time I looked at the offshore buoys there were 30'+ waves at 14 seconds. Kind of nasty.

I went down to check on the boat in the mooring basin yesterday and it was the first time I have ever walked uphill on the ramp to the dock (the end of the ramp has a hinged section that was steep downhill if you're wondering how that's possible). The tide was pretty high but not real high. Must be a lot of rain in the river along with the ocean holding it in.
 
It's raging down at Tillamook this morning. Yesterday, they were rolling over the top of the south jetty, and breaking all across the mouth of the bay. It sounds bigger this morning. I am going to check it out after daybreak.
