V-Berth Memory Foam Question

I have read all the threads on Memory Foam in the V-Berth, but I did not find an answer to my specific question. I have a 2000 CD22 recently purchased. The foam in the V-berth sunbrella cover is covered with thin plastic material then the foam. The foam is not mildewed, but has a funny smell to it. I was thinking about replacing the entire 4 inch thickness with memory foam. Has anyone done that and if so, is there enough support without bottoming out when laying on one's side? Another approach would be to insert some layer of firmer foam on the bottom and memory foam on the top. It would be nice to be able to keep all the foam inside the cover instead of a topper on top of the mattress, but I am not sure there would be enough support.

Here is what we did. At first we decided that the standard cushions were too hard sleeping in a Travasac on top of the standard cushions. Then we removed our standard cushions cut the sides of the sunbrella covering and had zippers installed. Then we removed half the stock foam by cutting it and added some 4" memory foam from Overstock.com back into the standard cushions with half of the standard foam. That was too soft. We removed the memory foam from the stock cushions and put the other half of the standard foam back in to return the cushions as they were. The memory foam had an egg carton type of bottom we made a cover for the one layer of memory foam ourselves. We tried sleeping on that over top of the standard cushions in the Travasac for a week or so. That was sort of ok. Midway on a trip out west we bought another queen sized piece of 4' memory foam at a Kmart. We put the two pieces of 4 inch memory foam together with egg carton sides facing each other and wrapped them up in a sheets for a temporary fix which was better. When we returned home we had a canvas guy make us up a canvas bag that matched the size of the bottom berth cushions with the two four inch pieces of memory foam inside with the egg shell pattern facing each other.
So we are back to sleeping on top of the standard cushions with two pieces of 4" memory foam put together with the egg carton sides facing each other inside a separate canvas covering with a black non slip bottom that prevents it from sliding around. This is about five inches thick. On top of of that we sleep on top of the Travasak then the king sized comforter on top which covers us. No more blanket shortages in the middle of the night. If things get nippy we crawl inside the Travasak and with the comforter on top we are golden even with temps in the mid thirties without the heater on. We spend up to a month at a time sleeping on the boat and for me it now rivals our Temper Pedic at home for comfort.

We had a local mattress maker make us a memory foam mattress and insert for the V-Berth on our 22. I don't think it was all momory foam, but it sure was nice sleeping. It was a little thicker than the stock mattress. It was rather expensive appx.$6 to 700.00.
Well worth the price my wife loved it.
 
We bought inexpensive 4" memory foam queen size from Overstock.com. I used the v berth stock cushions as a template and cut the new stuff out. We made a cover and put on top of the stock cushions. Wife and I are more comfortable in the boat than our memory foam bed! On the sides of the hull we put a long lounger cushion, from Lowes or HD, to lay against instead of the hard hull.

Works great, inexpensive and comfy!
 
We bought standard 4" foam from Joann fabrics (the aqua blue foam) and replaced the C-Dory factory foam that was really hard. We were able to reuse the original vberth cushion covers that already had zippers in them. The old foam smelled musty but I found plenty of takers and gave it away. We then bought a standard 2” queen memory foam topper from Target and cut it to fit. We then made a simple slip cover for the memory foam and it sits on top of the 4” as a topper. Soft on top and firmer on the bottom. Sleeps great! If you get more than 6” of bedding it starts cutting into your vberth headroom. We also have placed closed cell foam in the berth side walls to cut down on condensation and it give a nice soft feel if you snuggle against the hull. We also added 2 pieces of the closed cell foam on snaps that fit in the low space above our heads, no worries when you forget you’re on the boat and go to sit upright in the middle of the night.
