Verizon-Ready iPhone by Year End

Wow, that article had more "a source said", "according to people familiar with the matter", and "these people said" than I have ever seen in a report.

Before I bought my Droid last year, there was the 3rd or 4th round of "Verizon is going to get the iPhone" articles. Being a Mac kinda guy (since 1984, and an Apple IIe user before that), I wanted an iPhone in the worst way. After almost a year with the Droid, I have been more than satisfied with the phone and still very happy to be on Verizon's network. The ads are true: the Droid does.

Having said that, I think the iPhone would be a welcome addition to the Verizon line-up. Don't think I'd dump my Droid anytime soon. But, I sure do like the iPad and how easy it syncs with my MacBook Pro.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

This appears to be the latest reincarnation of this persistent rumor. According to an article in the Seattle Times, Verizon is rolling out 4G on its aircard products first, then Android. The Verizon VP said any announcement about the iPhone would come from Apple, not Verizon.

Looks like the iPhone is coming to Verizon early next year, says the New York Times. Apparently Apple does not want to lose any more market share to the Droids. If I read the article correctly, the Verizon iPhone will run on both 3G and 4G (the new LTE network.) .

We have three Verizon phones on a family plan. Patty and I have the Stupid BlackBerrys and Austin has something else, not sure what, but it is toast too. You would think Verizon would let you pay money and get a new phone, but they don't, they only let you do that once a year, unless you pay the full retail price ($530 for a Droid). We just asked yesterday at the Verizon store. They couldn't help with my creepy, on-again-off-again BlackBerry, they suggested doing a software wipe and reinstalling the OS. Oh yes, how to turn a barely useful phone into a brick! One phone is eligible for an upgrade in December of this year, and the other two in May of next year. Oh yes, any upgrade re-starts a NEW 2 year contract for ALL the phones on the family plan, Of course we can buy Verizon compatible phones on Craigslist. Or we can pay the early termination fee and change carriers. These bastards have you coming and going...

Reality check... It's not Verizon's fault the Blackberries crapped out. They "subsidize" your equipment by tying you into a two year additional contract. The other carriers have similar programs. When I got my Droid, the kid tried to sell me insurance for the phone; I declined. I understand if my Droid craps out, it's MY $500 to get another one if it's less than two years. It's business, not anyone being a bad guy. You didn't say, "Hey, let me give you something for these phones," when you got them "free" did you?

Most of us don't need a smart phone; we get 'em 'cause we want 'em. If a cheapie phone won't hold you until you're due for a discount (and another two year commitment), then you're going to pay something... either for a phone or the "escape."

Frankly, I think all the carriers are bloodsuckers, but I go with what works best for our situation. Keep 'em, dump 'em. If the next phone craps out or gets dropped in the water, THAT carrier will be the bad guy.

Hmmmm... this sound like a "pusher" situation to anyone else?

Can you hear me now?

Best wishes,
Jim

Yes, thanks. I spent a fair amount of time on Crackberry yesterday and this morning, did not see that one. I did get a fresh OS loaded - it was not easy, and required a Crackberry trick, which is to try the "Check for Updates" with the battery OUT. I have no idea why this worked, but it did. So I had no messages, no apps, no nothing except the fresh out-of-the-box configuration, and it is still rebooting and not holding a charge. Time for a change, but what change, I still don't know. The Craigslist route would be the cheapest until our Verizon contract is up next September...

Jim, of course I understand what you are saying. Although I think some part of the monthly amount we pay ought to go for support at the store, like dealing with phone problems, after all we bought them from Verizon not from RIM. And I fully understand they are ALL blood-sucking leeches. Somebody could really clean up by offering better rates and service, it seems there is no real competition among these guys.
