VIRUS ALERT ON OUR SITE - thread " I just want to know

There were four suspect new members in the past few days, one of which was the poster in question whom we had put a watch on. I did some snooping, and the other three suspects all had the same email domain from Russia, so they are gone too. The email domains for all four have been added to the ban list.

Most of the spammer types will sign onto busy forums in order to mine email addresses. The way Bill has the member email process set up, there is no way to get the membership's emails from the site (unless the guy is a supernerd, I suppose). There have been over 100 spammer types who have been kicked off and/or banned and we will keep after that task. Just know that unless you click on a link supplied by someone as the gun guy did you are pretty safe around these parts. Clicking suspect links here, just like anywhere on public sites, is unadvisable. Of course, I do it all the time when I want to see what a new member is linking to in his profile, but my anti-virus is pretty good and I haven't been bitten - yet.

We like to keep the enrollment open, so these guys will show up once in a while. Part of the price for popularity. Furthermore, because C-Brats sometimes call themselves weird names we can't be banning folks just because we think there might be a threat. Homeland security we ain't, but neither are we ACLU. We have been fairly successful keeping the bad guys out and not stepping on the good guys' toes, so for now we'll just keep going the way we have been doing it. If it gets too much worse, as could happen, then our resident supernerd will put a few more roadblocks up for new signups.

Thanks!

The thread and the poster are gone. Thanks for all the heads ups (is that a word?).

heading up...chartplotter type ar ar ar

a REAL heads up is when you get out of your car, walking toward to door of a store and discover a humungous Suburban backing out of its parking space, you're directly behind them and they haven't seen ya! I think my words this morning were "holy sh**!" I guess that's really a WAKE up, not a heads up...

As usual, I concur with the group. One thing that can be done if needed is to put a software ban on creating links to outside sites until the poster has say 20 or more posts. Most spammers don't go to that level of effort and by then it's clear they're not members of the "family".

This was not meant to be seen as picking on Mr. Rigby. It is OK for him to click on stuff because he is heavily armed. And his wife will fix whatever trouble he gets into.
