Wallas Heater Thumping

Fellow C-dorians,

I am a new CD22 owner on our first overnight. Am spending a cold night at a marina in Olympia, WA. Our Wallas 1300 kerosene heater makes a very noticeable thumping noise when we turn it on - about once a second. As the unit continues to warm up the intensity of the thump decreases and the rate decreases to about once every three seconds - but still thumps. Is this normal? I don't remember hearing this when we tested it out when we bought the boat. The heater seems to work fine - blows good hot air. Also, the thumping stops when we shut it off and the fan continues during the cool down phase.

Wrapped in blankets,

Tom

Sounds like the fuel pump. The rate will be faster on high than on low. Ours has always had a dull thump, but I find the heater (lid) fan much more annoying than the thump of the fuel pump.

Yep, sounds normal and you get used to it. It is not as easy to hear from the v-berth so that is nice. We either ran with the lid down and noisy fan covering the noise or with a small 12 volt fan running overnight across the burners with the lid up at anchor and heat turned down to 1-2. I always noticed it most while cooking with no fan running.

Thump is normal, especially as fuel is priming up the "heater"...it slows down as fuel pressure increases, and heater begins to function. There is only on and off, no high or low. But the 2 1300 wallas heaters I've had have always worked well. Ron

Back Home - and stayed warm in Olympia. Thanks for the quick info while we were underway. Didn't want to end up on fire on our first trip.

Tom,

Didn't see your names on the Friday Harbor sign up sheet! Any Brat in the PNW should put this event high on their list. It is a great time of food, fun, adult beverages if you wish and camaraderie with fellow Brats.

Hope you can come
