Hi Everyone,

Being on vacation this week I decided to bite the bullet and tear out the Wallas (85DU) for a good cleaning. It probably has an honest 2000 hours on it. Things being the way they are it just couldn't be a simple cleaning.

My question is, can someone tell me the availability of parts at Scan Marine? Specifically the Thermo Element and the Bottom Mat. In my mental image I picture driving up to Scan Marine and walking in the door, at 9a.m. when they open, and finding what I need. I want to see the glass half full. Any insight would be appreciated.

I can't say for sure they'll have the parts for the 85 DU, but they certainly did when I needed them for my 95DU. The parts you are looking for are fairly standard replacements so hopefully they will be in stock. Give them a call to be sure.

There's a SCAN marine tech that frequents the site, can't think of his name right now but maybe he'll see this and respond. You could search the Wallas threads, I know he answered some questions there.

Emailed Scan with a link to this thread in hopes someone will reply, I’d also like to know if there’s any preventable maintenance or cleaning one can periodically perform; the Wallas is a vital piece of equipment to us all.
 
OK, I spent a little time and found the Scan Tech that has been on our site. His screen name is "macmac" and here's a LINK to his posts. Only 6 of them but it looks like all were very professional. I'd try a PM or e-mail directly to him. E-mail would probably be best because if he frequents the site, he'd have already answered and a PM might go unnoticed. They are all at the Seattle boat show this week. I have a week old e-mail waiting for response.
Wanted to go to their stand and make loud noises but, of course, the guy in question wasn't there. Maybe saw me coming :evil:

Thanks for all the info.

I just got back from Scan Marine where I met Doug and Mike and another gentleman whose name I didn't catch. They said from the looks of the parts I brought my unit has been running way too hot. I'll take the whole works up this afternoon and see what they make of it.

By the way they could have got the parts I assumed I needed by this afternoon.

In an “automotive” sense, there is no meaningful “maintenance” for Wallas products other than maintaining a clean fuel supply. Since all Wallas products burn petro at 600 degrees C, parts are consumed, and deposits are left behind. Routine “overhauls” are needed and often required. The Wallas position on this subject is that few end users have the information and test equipment to make these repairs. Thus, there is limited “factory” information on this subject. For the small percentage of customers eager to “tinker” with their units, Scan Marine encourages them to contact our staff for “tips” and “limitations” likely encountered in these “at home repairs.” All customers should feel free to contact me (Mike) at the office M-F, 9-5pm, (206)285-3675.
 
Hi All,

Spoke to Mike at Scan Marine today. The main curcuit board is shorted and that was causing it to double its fuel consumption. That's why it was running too hot. Wallas will take care of the board but there would be labor for me to pay for. Seems pretty fair.

Surprisingly, there were only 975 hours on it. My perception of 2000 hours just means we were enjoying our time. All in all we still love our 85du. I guess we'll get used to it taking longer than ten minutes to boil water.

Sounds as if we'll have it back tomorrow A.M. We'll head for Blake Sat. and see how it holds up for the Weekend.

Triple J- Thanks for posting the email from Mike at Scan. Sounds like reasonable advice. I'm glad I opened ours up. I feel confident I could have replaced the bad parts and put it back together. But like Scan said, with the high heat issue it would have just been a matter of time before I brought it in with the same problems, or worse.

Sounds like you're getting your hours in, and your money's worth!

The average recreational boat (not a liveaboard or commercial boat) is operated about 58 hours a year (motor in gear), according to a survey by a manufacturer's association I can't remember the name of right now.

2000 hours is a full year of work for some people: 50 weeks x 40 hours a week!

Enjoy your rebuilt Wallas!
