I had to drop a couple of my beautiful birch trees due to some rot and splitting. They were at least 70' high. Today's adventure was cutting them up and splitting them. Needless to say, swinging a splitting maul brings on a healthy sweat. As soon as they dry (next season), they can warm me in the wood stove.
It was an interesting collection of critters that came out of the split tree. One dead red shafted flicker, ants galore, termites, earth worms, some type of a clustered mushroom, a very nice soil, and who knows what else.
I wish every tree cut and split as easy as birch.
